Hello everyone, I am looking for advice again. A little background, we have three wonderful boxer kids right now, a female and two males. They are all wonderful and get along very well. Recently, the humane society in my area had an animal emergency and took custody of 26 dogs that were being starved and used as breeding stock. The humane society was overrun with non housebroken dogs ranging from burmese mountain dogs, bull masstifs, akitas, and on. Me, being the softy I am, offered to foster a bull masstiff in our home. The manager of the humane society made a visit to our home yesterday and said we had such a wonderful boxer family that maybe we would want to adopt the boxer female that was rescued, but not kept at the kennel. The boxer is being fostered at a private home. This home has another dog, a dalmation, and after much pestering from the dalmation, the boxer got into a small fight with the dalmation. Our female has been good with any dogs to come in our home and we have several visiting dogs, but they have all been males. I want to help, but I just am not sure what to do. Do boxer females normally get along or not?

2 females are the highest risk scenario of not getting along and if they don't, there is little hope of resolution. Bitches fight to eliminate the other animal, not for pack order.

It is NOT AT ALL ADVISIBLE to have 2 female boxers living together. Since they are a pretty scrappy breed, in general, your liklihood of having problems is higher. That's not to say that 2 females living in peace never happens, but you run a much higher risk of fighting and when it starts, there's usually little you can do but keep them completely separated for life. And, from experience I can tell you, keeping two dogs separated is a very difficult way of life.

Most, if not all, boxer rescues will not allow female - female placements. I would be very leary of a rescue that does.

Please read this rather lengthy post before deciding to bring another female into your home.

Best of luck,
Julie

I agree. I wouldn't have two female boxers living together.

Both of mine are females and I got them a year apart. Mine are so in love with one another! They have easy personalities, so that may be why. Adults may be a different story. You can always see how they will all get along on a trial basis. I am very happy with my 2 females.

Yes, however problems do not typically surface between 2 females until the younger of the 2 reaches maturity. Your youngest is only 1 year of age ;)

For what it is worth, I would never recommend 2 females under one roof. Most rescues would never adopt a female to a house with an existing female.

Two female dogs (boxers, or bully breeds in particular) isn't a guaranteed recipe for disaster... but it is a high risk. This is the combination that is the most likely to have issues. What is worse is that *if* there are issues, they're serious ones that are extremely difficult to resolve. Unlike dogs, bitches are not fighting for supremacy, but to be rid of the other bitch.

The other thing to note is that problems rarely occur until the younger bitch reaches maturity - around 2 years old, or so. Which in most cases means that you've had both dogs for at least two years with them getting along famously, until "suddenly" the fights begin. In reality, it's not sudden at all - but few owners pick up the subtle signs of posturing until it's too late (they're not looking, of course - since the dogs have always got along so well...).

Anyway. That is not quite your situation, since your own bitch and the one you're considering adopting are both already adults. However, it is quite likely that they could get along fine for a few months, and then things can change rapidly. It is not always the case. Some bitches get along their whole lives. But many don't, and *if* they don't then it's a serious issue.

That's something to think about. It doesn't necessarily mean that this could not be made to work. But if you try it, you need to acknowledge and be prepared for the possibility that things will go pear-shaped, and you may have to later re-home one bitch or alternatively live in a situation where only one of them can be loose at any given time.

I would have to agree with the majority! I have only heard bad things about having 2 boxer females. I had a female boxer (we got her at 8 weeks) and she was wonderful with all other animals until she was about 2 years old. Then one day she just snaped. Then each fight got worse and worse. The bad thinks was you never knew when she would decide to start a fight. She could go a month or two playing just fine. She would be playing wonderful one second and ready to tear you apart the next. However, she was ALWAYS wonderful with all people and kids. After lots of research, I learned most femal boxers will fight to the death. TRUST ME from experience, she almost killed the other dog. I know you would love to help the poor baby. Do you know of anyone else who would like to adopt? I just don't know why some people have pets!!!!!

Thank you all for your advice. You have all confirmed what I was pretty sure I knew. Our little girl has never been aggressive, but I am not taking any chances. I called the humane society and told her we really would love to help, but can't take the chance of either our girl or the rescue girl getting hurt. She understood completely and thanked me for the info, she was not aware how aggressive boxer females were, now she knows. I told her if it had been a male boxer I would be more willing to see how he would work in our home, just not a female and then fate stepped in (or is it irony...:). She told us that a brindle, neutered male boxer was picked up as a stray two days ago. Maybe we will be able to help in another way. Or is four boxers too much....hmmm I dun know.....I would have a house full if I could and that is saying alot considering we have a 6 bedroom house. Once again, thank youa ll so much.

...golly,I've always had 2 girls with little to no problems...I'd pick the Boxer girl over the Bullmastiff....I've heard the bullmastiffs can be very agressive with other dogs .....
