Two better then one?

My wife and I have Rocco now for 3 months, he is turning 5 months old. We are currently in a one bedroom apartment in NYC. We have a park across the street that we bring him to, and try to walk him as much as possible. (I read that boxers have alot of energy, but wow is that an understatement!!!) He is a great puppy, doing well now with potty training and other training in general. He is funny, happy and just a great time. Now the question is, would he do better with another boxer in the house. We are currently in the process of house hunting, so hopefully the one bedroom will soon increase to a full house with a backyard. We notice that many people on here have two boxers. Rocco is a very quiet dog barking wise, he rarely barks unless introduced to a new toy. With two in the house will the noise increase that our neighbors in our current apartment building might start complaining? Could two co-exist for a few months in an apartment?

Long story short, we are pretty pumped and hell bent on getting a second boxer, I guess we are looking for some negatives to help us figure out if now is the right time or not?

It's generally a good idea to wait until your current dog is around two years old before adding to the family. The thought behind this is that most of their puppy antics are over, you have a good foundation of training and the dogs adult personality is pretty apparent.
I am certainly glad I waited, dealing with two teenage boxers at the same time would have been the death of me.

Now that said...it certainly can be done. And if you have than one person helping with the two dogs the better. So that's my two cents. Good luck on the house hunting!

pheewww...now that I got that off my chest...

I got Justice when Kelseigh was 9 1/2 months and everything was fine...granted I have a house and 3/4 of an acre yard.

I am a firm believer that every boxer deserves another boxer. However, yours is still a pup and you're going to be going thru the "trying teens" shortly. If you throw a new puppy into that you could possibly think you'll lose your mind. Plus house hunting with a pup at home that needs to be let out frequently isn't easy. Plus you'd be house breaking a new pup in the dead of winter in NY. I don't know about you, but I'm not the kind of person who likes to get up and get dressed in the middle of the night to take a puppy outside to potty when it is freezing out. I did this with our last pup, and swore I'd never get one in the winter again.

So let your pup grow up some more and once you've found a place go for it!

Sorry, but I would wait until your pup is older before adding another. It will also be a lot easier to house train your pup when you have a house.

We've have found that our boxers are happiest when there's two - but we've always had a good couple of years age difference, one reason being that 2 youngsters would drive me nuts but also from the selfish point of few that in an ideal world they live to old age that we don't loose them both in a short period of time.

There is considerably more noise in our house since Charlie joined us - she loves to wind Dino up into action so there's barking, yipping & charging round at high speed. Not a problem for us as we're not in a flat but something you would need to work on to keep things quieter!

Great idea on getting an older rescue though appicon Our Sophie & Charlie were both rescues. There are so many more mature dogs needing homes, afterall a puppy is only a puppy for a months but an adult for the rest of their life.

I am all for two boxers......I think I will always have two boxers. But I would wait if I were you. Baby Cody drove me crazy and Baby Aniah was straight from you know where.....such a naughty girl. If they had been babies together....I shudder at the idea :eek: I don't think I could have had two puppies at once and still had dogs afterwards. Wait until your boy is older and you have found a house and moved. Cody was about 2 when we got our little girl and I think it was a great age to introduce another. And yes two boxers make a lot more noise not all of it barking...but they talk and growl a lot while playing and of course they jump and romp and run and all of that is very loud, especially in an apartment.
