Two Barking Boxers!!!!!!!

Now that we have two boxers, they have become super barkers. Especially to other dogs. It gets so loud that I have to practically drag them in the house for it to stop. My friend said I need to get them out and socialized more around other dogs but they get so crazy that I am almost afraid to. They of course adore eachother. I have one male, 8 mo. and one female 1-1/2, both have been nuetered and spayed.

I would start taking them for walks and socializing them. You can't be afraid to take them out. It will only esculate if you don't. I know when Titus is home he will growl at dogs walking by but when he is away from home he's ready to play with everyone he see's. For him it's territory. And i'm o.k. with that. I wouldn't go as far as taking them to a doggie park and turning them loose but I would keep them on a leash and teach them how to socialize. Training is the only answer. The sooner you start the better. Oop's......I guess sooner isn't a good word to use in here. :p

Socialization question

I posted in the behavior section that I am having a hard time with my two boxers. They bark at every dog in sight. They go crazy if any dogs come near our fence. I have not done a good job taking them out alot because I guess I have been spoiled by the way they play so well together in our yard and home. Now the barking problem is escalating and I know I need to get them out more. I cannot handle the two of them myself, so what I am asking is will it still help if I can at least take them out separately? I feel that the two of them act like a pack when they are in the yard together, almost ganging up to cause mayhem. My male is neutered, 8 mo. old and my female is spayed. 1-1/2 years old.

Group classes are a good way to help the socialization process. They can help you deal with the "problem" of barking.

You can and should take them out separately on a regular basis, or you will end up with dogs that undergo separation anxiety every time they are apart. So walking one at a time would actually be good for them.

However, it is common for Boxers to bark when they see something that excites them. It doesn't mean they are being aggressive. Check out some of the links under obedience and training that deal with barking.

You need a command word that will stop them from barking. It can be "quiet" or "hush". The word doesn't matter as long as your dogs understand that it means to stop barking.

Have you tried using a gentle on your dogs when you walk? I didn't think I would be able to walk my two by myself and with the gentle leader it has become possible. We have this younger dog that wants to play with my two so bad and escapes from his yard and comes to our house. Cayenne goes nuts. I try to call Cayenne inside each time she does this. She then knows it is not acceptable to bark like that. Socialization will help especially since your pups are younger. Good luck!

Sure, it will still help if they go out separately.

It would be best if they can go out together sometimes, because there certainly is some "pack" effect that happens. My two are the same way. Xena is good as gold around other dogs when she's alone, but if her little brother is there, she starts barking furiously (all show) and freaks out!

Try giving your dogs other tasks to do when dogs are around - make them do a sit- or down-stay, start playing with a ball or favorite toy, give them something to eat...they'll learn to quit paying so much attention to the other dogs.

First of all have your dogs been through any training classes? If not you will want to do that with them. The classes are very good for the social asspect, and it will also make it easier for you to take both of them out at the same time.
