Tumor at one year old?

I had noticed a bump on Ozwald's ear about a month ago. It was on the inside of the floppy part, and I thought he had just nicked it and it was a little infected. Well, it's grown a little since then ( it's almost dime sized now) and since it still hadn't gone away, I took him to the vet yesterday. My vet thought it might be a tumor! I thought Ozzy was way too young to have one. I know boxers are really prone to getting them, but I thought most boxers got them as older dogs. She also mentioned that it might be malignant. I just couldn't believe it! Has anyone elses boxers had tumors or cancer this young? or have any of them gotten tumors in their ears? It seems like such an odd place for him to get one. He has it removed next Wednesday, and the vet said if it looks cancerous, they are going to have to cut a hole through his ear! I'm just a little freaked out right now by everything. I had no idea this could happen to a dog this young. Please send some prayers and good vibes Ozzy's way, and thanks for any responses!~

My dog Tyson had a bump on his chin when he was about a year old. It kept getting bigger and he bumped it on time and it started bleeding bad, so we took him to the emergency vet and they said it was a tumor. We then took him to our regular vet and they confirmed it was a tumor. They said it had to be removed. He was going to be neutered anyway, so we went ahead and had both done at the same time. They tested the tumor to see if it was cancerous and it was not. The vet said that tumors were common in boxers and sometimes they go away on their own. Well, a year later he got another one on his cheek. With time, this tumor did go away on its own. Good luck with your baby.

Good Morning Ih4x My little girl had a rather big tumor on the bone part of the ear, this was to months ago or so, she was only eight months at the time it blew me away, thank God it was benign.

My Austin had a tumor on his front leg when he was only 4. Hopefully your baby will be ok.

Well my fawn boxer had a tumor on his foot at about 3. My white had one on his ear, last year and we got both of them removed. The tumors were benign.

My white has had the black little tumors on his body and a different kind of tumor on his eye and on his ear. My fawn boxer has had no more and he's six now. The vet told us that the one on my white boxer's eye was probably from the sun so we keep him out of the sun as much as possible. My white is doing really well and is about 5 or so years old now, it just seemed like we had a rough patch with all the little tumors, etc.

Unfortunately, my dog was just a little under a year old when he was diagnosed with a malignant mast cell tumor in his groin. We had it removed followed by a month of radiation treatments. He is now 2 1/2 and doing well (knock on wood). I don't mean to scare you -- just wanted to let you know that it is possible that it's a tumor and it could even be malignant. However a vast majority of cancerous tumors, mast cell and otherwise, occur in dogs 8 and older. My other dog was about a year old with a big "tumor" on her ear that turned out to be a bening histiocytoma. The statistics are certainly on your side. Try not to worry too much and know that you did the right thing by getting your dog to the vet quickly to get it checked out.

Rocky had a hystiocytoma on the inside of the floppy ear too. The vet wanted us to remove it so we made the date and the next day we went to his dermatologist who suggested we put a cream on it called Betamethasone and it went away on its own. The vet had told us that the bump could be a tumor but the dermatologist said that it was a hystiocytoma. What does the bump look like? Does it bleed on its own any? Oh yeah Rocky was about 7 months when all this happened and the vet did scare us by saying it could be malignant....the dermatologist did an aspiration on it and it did not show any bad cells. The bump started off small then got very big and started to just go away on its own....the cream did work. Sometimes I just have to wonder if vets tend to scare us into unnecessary surgery,,,If I were you I would get a second opinion. Good Luck and keep us posted.

Hi, thanks for all the responses. To Rocky Hoya, his bump is about dime sized, but isn't completly round. It has a scab on it that falls off every once in a while, but I've never actually seen it bleed. I thought about getting a second opinion anyway, because I dont really trust this vets judgement. After reading these posts, I decided I would. I'm glad to know that this has happened to other dogs that were Ozzy's age and that they are all fine. I have moved his appointment to Thursday and I have another appointment with a different vet on Wednesday. I'll let you all know how everything works out, and thanks again!

The only reason Rockys scab would bleed is because we would clean it. If it is scabbing on its own I would definetely try the betamethasone cream before doing any surgery.

My Samson is 15 months old, and he has a tumor that will be removed tomorrow. I am praying that everything goes well. Hopefully both Ozzy and Sam will be just fine Keep us posted on Ozzy.
