I live in a city that requires dogs to be on leashes when outdoors. Our new baby, Punchinella is ten weeks old. At what age should we start enforcing the leash rule?
We've already introduced her to the leash...and she hates it! We pretty much have to drag her along as she locks her legs and won't budge. Any suggestions?

Thanks - Punchinella's Mom

I am new to the site, so if I'm not submitting my quesiton correctly, please let me know.

That really is too young to be on a leash for any length of time. But since you have the leash law,you could walk Punchi for 5 minutes then pick her up for 5 minutes and then let her walk for a few minutes more. If young pups are on leash too much they may do damage to developing joints etc. They can run and play all day if they want no problem though. I would invest in a harness if you haven't already.Good luck

I have walked Zeb around the garden a few times to try get him used to it as I did when Lola was a pup. Some hate it, some don't mind.
Zeb bucks around like a bucking bronco trying to get the collar and lead off him

Zeus acts the exact same way the few times I have had to take him outside of our yard. Like I am torturing him or something. If not for the leash he would follow me anywhere, but w/ our leash laws we can't have him off leash, not even in our front yard. I can't wait until he is old enough to take on walks!!

What is a good age to leash train? Hemi is on a leash everyday to potty. we haven't ventured out of the yard for a walk yet though. She's 4 months old.

My suggestion for anyones puppy who is trying to leash train is leave the collar and leash on inside the house let him drag it so he gets used to it being around then like what was suggested do 5 min training sessions I would do it inside where he is most comfortable.

My firends Boxer hated the leash at first I was persistent for a weekend and at around 10-12 weeks (cant remember when it was) he was leash trained.

Hope that helps Good Luck

Another thing to try is put the leash on your pup when you are going to feed them. It gets them used to the leash and it start to associate good things with the leash.

That is a really good idea, I would never have thought of it. Thank you so much!
