Trouble Breathing

My 3 1/2 year old child has problems breathing..... He snorts all the time like he cannot get his breath. I took him for a walk a couple of weeks back late at night so that it wasn't so hot outside, but by the time we got back he had such a hard time breathing it scares me. I asked my vet about this and he said that is was normal, but it doesn't sound normal to me. Any suggestions????

Is this a two legged or for legged child?

If it's a boxer, some amount of snuffling and snorting is normal, generally - but its hard to say without hearing it. It shouldn't sound like he can't catch his breath though. If you question your vet's diagnosis, get a second opinion. It is never a bad idea to consult another vet anytime you don't feel right about what a vet has told you. Remember, human doctors only deal with one species, where vets deal with hundreds - and it's hard to be expert at all of them.

These are the four legged children! The only ones I will ever have! I have already lost one to fence jumping, I couldn't handle losing one to breathing problems.....He has had a hard life and we have had the same vet since he was 8 weeks old. He fell into the swimming pool 3 days after we got him and nearly drowned. I wonder if something didn't happen to his lungs when that happened. I took him and his sister to the vet for their yearly checkups and the vet told me that they were very healthy and happy dogs and not to worry about Zeke breathing that hard. I will however take your advise on a 2nd opinion!

Thank you so much!

My Susie is a very rapid, hard mouth breather too. I also worry that she doesn't get enough air. I watch her carefully and have noticed that since she is so small and pettite, her litttle nose is very tiny too and she has a particularly scrunched up face. About the only time she isn't panting is when she is asleep. I have had her checked and there are no heart problems or lung problems at all. It is merely a fact of the breed that short snouted dogs have more trouble breathing (see Am. Bulldogs, pugs, etc.)...

Susie also snorts and sneezes a lot. I do know that she has some grass allergies, and this can also contribute to breathing difficulties. You might want to check for allergies as well. They can clog up sinuses as well as they do in people. Ask your vet about allergies contributing to breathing difficulties.

Otherwise, I've learned not to worry about it. Maggie also snorts a lot, even tho she has a longer snout than susie and a bigger nose. I just learned to live with doggie snot all over me and my apartment. :D

THANKS FOR THE INPUT! I GUESS I WILL HAVE TO BUY EAR PLUGS AND GET USED TO SNOT! I GUESS I AM JUST A TYPICAL MOM, WORRY, WORRY, WORRY!!!!:)

Hi Julie. After reading about your problem I felt compelled to reply. My 4 yr. old male started doing that very thing this summer and I thought it was just the heat that was causing him to pant and snort. His appetite slowly deminished and he wanted to rest all of the time. About a week ago his legs gave out while getting out of bed and his panting became worse, almost like a gasp. We immediately took him to our vet, who at first said that she couldn't find anything and told us it was probably heat related. We insisted that she look further, so she took some chest xrays and sure enough, he had an enlarged heart and some fluid build up. We are currently on the waiting list for an echocardiogram and I'm sad to say our "Rocco" is not doing very well. They suspect cardiomyopathy and don't know how serious it is. I don't mean to be an alarmist, but please have your baby checked thoroughly by your vet. Heart disease is quite common in male boxers so I am told.

Dear Julie, I agree you should have your boy checked out. But I would like to tell you what we found with our female. For the last 3-4 weeks, she has had trouble breathing with weezing during exhale. We were also concerned she had something wrong with her heart, lungs. Well it stopped for two days, then I noticed it again this morning. I realized then that I wasn't running my air conditioner for those two days that she wasn't weezing. I think at least in her case, that when we run the air, it takes the moisture out of the air and leaves her with a dryed up nose and caused the irritation. I hope thats all it is for your boy:)

Leese.... Thanks for the reply, I think I have decided that I will have him checked out. His breathing seems to get real bad when he has been outside and been running. So with all hope he is just getting too hot and does not have a heart or lung problem. I couldn't go through losing another "child" so young.
