I had touble finding tasty treats that would keep Greta's attention in puppy class. I tried all kinds of treats and toys. One day I was opening the peanut butter jar and there she was with the perfect sit-stay! After that I want on a mission for handy peanut butter snacks to use for training. The solution is peanut butter chips (like you put in cookies). They are small and work like magic. My husband refers to them as doggie crack. Of course, purests wouldn't like all the sugar but I use them only during training. :D
We used to use hot dogs for training - just a tiny sliver. They are quickly and easily swallowed so you can immediately go on with the training. It seems to work best to use something that is not hard and dry and requires a lot of chewing - that distracts from "the work at hand".
My wife Tamera buys a small tub of beef liver cuts it into small strips and bakes it real slow on a low heat. After they are good and stiff she cuts them into smaller peices. Then puts some in the freezer and a small ziplock bag of them in the fridge. Our pup Zoe thinks its the best thing in the world. Plus you can hold them in your mouth during the training and they dont taste nasty.(IMO)A dehydrator would work great for this if you have one. _____________________ Zoe 13 wk brindle doll
I found the best thing to keep my dog's attention in obedience class was the little squares of cheese, although I cut them even smaller than they came in the package. When I open the cheese drawer in the refrigerator - I couldn't ask for more well behaved dogs.
Well, although it's a bit messy, Brando's favorite thing in the whole word is peanut butter! It's not exactly a convenient treat, but it's a great way to make a pill go down easily!
