Treats?

Hot dogs and cheese are a favorite around here. Recently I've started sprinkling garlic powder on the hot dogs and microwaving/baking them to dry them out a bit, and Juno goes nuts for them. The first time I gave her one you could just see her thinking about the different flavor haha.

i actually bought a HUGE boston butt roast - slow cooked in the cooker all day ~~ got home from work - the kids ( grown ) where like , hey where are the taters n carrots !!! ???? .....

Liver and Chicken

My dogs really like Liver I boil it in a little bit of water and then pour the water over their food that night then I lay it out on a cookie tin to dry out then you can pull it off in small slivers and give it to them.
Chicken is another favorite, I bake it and then same thing let it cool and it pulls off in slivers. They love it.

yes he did - for a cpl days !! was actually funny to watch the kids drool over what he got !! still laughing about it - and sam still has some in the freezer !! and yes , the kids still dont pay rent !! LOL LOL ( or get pot roast )

There is also this great receipe that Jan posted in a different thread. It is really easy to make and both my dogs will do anything for it :D

TUNA FUDGE -- good agility /obedience treat, soft, smelly

2 - 6 oz. cans tuna OR 1 - 14 oz. can salmon (do not drain either)
1 1/2 cup whole wheat flour or Brown Rice Flour
1 Tbsp garlic powder or granulated garlic
2 eggs -- lightly beaten
grated parmesan cheese, about 1 handful

Mix all together in a mixer or food processor, I use a food
processor and toss in a few small chunks of parmesan cheese first to grate those, then add the rest all at once and pulse until thoroughly mixed, takes maybe 3 minutes start to finish.

grease a 9x9 pan (I use spray canola oil), bake in 350 degree oven for 20 minutes. ( I would use parchment paper)

Texture is sort of fudge/putty-like .Keep them in freezer as they freeze very well. They can be kept in the refrigerator for 3 days. I cut them into very small squares. I toss them into a freezer bag and leave in freezer until needed. Only take out the amount required.

CAUTION: do not refreeze any leftovers, just make the pups do some extra tricks at home to get the goodies.

My favorite treats are Mini Zukes. They're already cut up small, and they're soft but firm enough you can keep them in your pocket without mashing them. Gavroche likes them.

Gavroche's favorite treat, on the other hand, is Pupperoni. Yes, it's junk, but if that's what he'll work for, that's what I'll use. It's great when you need a high value reward. His second favorite are cheese Best Buddy Bits (and I have to agree, these are pretty tasty...taste like very good cheese crackers ...pupperoni on the other hand tastes like cheap smoked jerky). Those are pretty delicate, though, so I don't use them often.

Remember that you need to balance ease of use and what you like with what your dog likes. If you use a treat your dog doesn't like, it's not going to be much use. IF you use something that your dog LOVES but you can't carry easily, it's also not going to work well.

You can buy treats that are already small, or you can cut up larger treats. Gavroche likes those liver things from Bil Jac (Authority has a similar one) but they're large. I cut them up. If I'm feeling lazy I buy Mini Jacs, which are the same thing but already tiny (they're supposed to be for small dogs, but they're a great training treat for any dog). I have also bought those meat rolls that some people feed (they come in all sizes) and cut them up into tiny pieces. Some need to be refrigerated after you open the tube, though, so if that's the case it can make it a little more difficult.

One more thing...one way I train attention (I learned this from my dad) is to spit treats at the dog when they're looking at you. If you want to do this, you need to be comfortable putting whatever treat you're using in your mouth. I will use pupperoni for this, most of the time, some people use hot dogs or chicken or other meats.

Hmmm I'm so curious about this method. I've heard about it a few times and have wondered how well it works... then again, Juno's a horrid catcher and just lets things hit her in the face, so I suppose it wouldn't work very well. .

That definitely sounds like a treat that is both stinky and delicious, which is usually the most successful haha... I HATE the smell of tuna but I might have to get over it and try these out someday.

well i found this on here ... i made it according to the directions , but it didnt work out well ... ( for me anyway ) i will post the original recipe and then share what i did to fix it ... sam loves them - and i know whats in it a double plus ( in my book anyway ) and it was kinda fun to bake for the dog - and since all ppl food - we taste tested ! ... ( my daughters hubby came home and he was like "" yumm ur baking cookes " i handed him a spoonful ( he he ) and he took a big bite and got a funny face - spit it out - gave me a dirty look " these are for sam !! " he said ... well he DIDNT ASK !!!! I THOUGH MY DAUGHTER WAS GOING TO PEE HER PANTS LAUGHING !!!!!!

BUT ANYWAY ~~~

add half a cup of peanut butter to a mixing bowl ( i nucked it 30 secs )
Use a whisk to whip the peanut butter and make it light and creamy.
Add a half cup milk and whisk into the peanut butter.
Add 1 1/2 cups water.
The mix should be a similar color to cafe au lait.
Add enough flour to make a soft dough (pliable enough to roll out but not too stiff).
Cut shapes out with cookie cutter.
Put in warm oven and bake at 300 degrees for half an hour.
Turn oven down to 200 degrees and bake an additional half an hour.
Turn off oven and leave in warm oven to turn crispy.

i found this was way to wet - and started to taste like flour ~ so i added (to half the mix )
about a cup of pb,
some honey
packet of instant ( flavored oatmeal )
and kept adding crumbled cheerios to the mix
till goopy

and baked them just like drop cookies...

to the other half -
same thing almost ( not sure if any of this was going to work )

added more pb ( we are trying to thicken it up at this point )
some honey
a bit more floor

then spread it on a cookie sheet like a huge cookie
baked about 20 mins on 300
let cool
cut into small bite size ( for training) squares
then put bake on sheet into warm ( 300 ) oven for 30 mins or so - we now have a soft - treat that is fresh. and for about 2 dollers or so - i have a huge zip lock bag of treats


next time i make them though - i will half the water and double the PB and add honey - to start .. and see how it works out !!

but it was fun .. and sam had a blast cleaning up all my sticky bowls ( like 8 of them !! ) i never let him lick dishes - so was a great treat !! ( after all the taste testing he did - i did half his dinner - and he didnt even mind !

Yeah, that makes it a little less effective . It works AWESOME with my parents' GSDs, but alas, Gavroche is also horrible at catching, so it doesn't work so well for him. It just kind of bounces off his nose, and then instead of making him pay attention, it distracts him...and so we end up working on "leave it" more than "look"
