Treats for Puppies?

We have a new boxer, and I was wondering when is an appropriate age to begin using treats? So far we have not strayed from his food at all but I would like to begin using treats to encourage walking on a leash (our current mission). I've heard of people using food kibbles, has anyone had luck with this? I would also like to know if there are any homemade treat recipes out there that anyone has used that are good specifically for young puppies. I found a recipe online for carrot and cinnamon treats (honey, applesauce, carrots, cinnamon, wheat germ)that sounds amazing... Turkish is 8 weeks, and brand new to us, but I don't think it's too early to encourage good behavior, is it? Thanks!!

For Cash, we were VERY strict about which treats he got - only those made for puppies. With June, we try to stick to the puppy treats, but sometimes give her "regular" treats that Cash gets as long as they are smaller. Keep in mind that Cash has kidney issues, so I try to pick out treats that have minimum amounts of sodium and phosphorus. A good training aid that we use is plain Cheerios. Unless your dog is allergic to grains, this is a great cheap training treat!
A great place I have found to get healthier, more interesting treats is Jeffers (Discount Pet Supplies, Pet Supply, Online Pet Supplies).

I'd recommend you stick either to using your pup's kibble, or whole foods such as green beans, small pieces of biled chicken or liver, dehydrated beef, that kind of stuff. If you do a search on recipes on here there's quite a few. I had posted a recipe for treats that uses whatever flavor of baby food you want (veggie or meat) with water and flour and that's it. Very easy very cheap but still healthy.

But there's also brands such as Wellness, Natural Balance, and a few others that are great dog food brands that also make healthy treats as well if you want to go the store bought route.

Good luck.

Thanks!

I tried using the kibble as a reward yesterday and he went nuts over it!! I think I'll stick to that for a couple of weeks, and then branch out a bit. I'd really like to make things at home when I have the time, only because I love to be in the kitchen, but thank you for the brand suggestions! I'll definitely be searching for recipes soon though! Thank you again!

We use Turkey hot dogs and cheese for our guys. They ONLY get them when training, so it's an extra special lure. :) And it's cheap!

Kilby wasn't (isn't) food oriented so with her training we used toys. Kona on the other hand responds very well to food rewards. With her we used small pieces of gravy beef (say half the size of your fingernail), small pieces of cheese (the stinkier the better), apple, banana etc. Worked well for us and didn't have all the unknowns of the store-bought treats.
