I have a 1 yr old boxer who just spent 4 days in a kennel. She told me when we were leaving that he had loose bm and she mentioned it was prolly stress. Well when we got home i noticed that from a sandwich baggy of milk bones i had left there was only 4 left which means he had alot of treats in the 4 days, id say bout 6 a day and that is lots since he doesnt get that much at home. He has had loose bm now id say bout 4 days now and i noticed blood today not sure if it is just cause his bum might be raw from all the loose bm or if it is something else. He has constant gas i mean every few seconds no word of a lie and loud and stinky. I havent given him any treats obiously but he has been eatting and drinking and he is even still playing around with kids. My vet is suppose to call to check on him tomorrow but i really want to know how many more days till the treats are outta his system and his bm are back to normal? he never has loose stools like this before

It probably is the treats and could be combined with the stress of being kenneled. It's good that you've contacted your vet just in case it is something worse, though--after all, he was in a kennel environment and could have caught something.

My two usually get diarreah after my family comes to visit. I blame it on my mom because every time I turn around, she's giving them extra treats or bits from her plate. If they have loose stools for more than a day, I usually add some white rice and a heaping spoonful of canned pumpkin to their meals. It helps to firm their stools.

One thing I've found helpful is to tell the kennel staff that my dogs are allergic to wheat and should only be given their kibble. I don't know for sure that they are truely allergic since I've never tested them, but wheat makes my boy have loose stools and terrible gas and it makes my girl get itchy paws. Wheat won't kill them, but I don't tell the kennel staff that! I always pack a little bag of extra kibble for them to use as treats--usually a fish one that my dogs' stomachs tolerate well, but they don't get regularly so it is a "treat" for them. I've found the staff is much more likely to go easy on treats if they know there is a health issue, and since the kibble is much smaller than typical treats, my dogs aren't "overtreated".

I bet if next time you were to tell them that too many treats bother your guy's stomach (even write it on the bag) and break the treats into smaller pieces, they wouldn't give him so many. After all, they had to clean up his loose stools while he was there and would probably gladly help prevent them next time!

I'm sure it was an overindulgence in treats, and probably some stress too. I would put him on a bland diet of chicken and rice for a few days and then slowly add kibble back to his diet (mixing it with the chicken and rice) until he clears up. Sending vibes to his poor little tummy and bum.

loose bm

Tyson is 5 mos old and has what I call soft serve ice cream BM. He has had them for a while. Sometimes they are a little firmer but, not what I would call normal. The vet suggested a chicken and rice diet. Any other suggestions? The vet also said it might be allergies or treats or the dog food. He is on Canidae all life stages. Thank You
