Trash Scavenger

Other than the obvious (removing the trash cans), does anyone have any suggestions of how to train a boxer to not get into the trash?

I hope you get some good suggestions on this one. This is the one problem that I have not been able to break Reese of. The way our house is designed there is not really a good place to put the garbage can except where he can access it.

I'm not sure if this would be an option for you, but my solution was to install one of those sliding trash cans under the sink- actually it's a metal outline of a receptacle, which I put a paper grocery bag in for trash. It has grooves that I screwed into the bottom of the cabinet under the sink. I actually love this now, because the trash is not out taking up room in my tiny kitchen, Baxter can't get at it, and I can slide it out very easily - I prefer this over any other trash can I've ever had. I think I got it at Bed, Bath and Beyond about 3 years ago.

Our boxers haven't been trash hounds, but our weim couldn't resist the lure of the can. Truly the only way we could keep her out of it was by gating the kitchen at all times and making sure the bathroom doors were always closed. We tried just about every style of receptacle on the market and she was able to get every lid off.

We have since moved and our new kitchen has the trash cans in a bottom cabinet. I'm positive she would have been able to figure out how to open it given a little time!

So no good suggestions from me, just sympathy from someone who's been there too.

I stick mine out on my enclosed porch. My ex hubby has 2 german sheppards and he built a wooden box that his trash cans slide into, and a wooden lid to go on top. It basically looks like a wooden trash can, but the plastic one sits inside of it. I believe he has it weighted down and the wooden lid lifts up so the dogs cant tip it over or lift the lid themselves.

They make an electrical device that you can put near the can and it will emit a most annoying sound that deters the dog from going near it. It could be a good option, though I have no info for this product.
