Training your Boxer to go in one location in the yard

Hi! I have a five month old Boxer pup named Bella, who is mainly inside the house. We have taken her outside on the leash since day one to one particular spot in our yard to relieve herself as well as to make sure that she is actually going. I've always heard of people training their dogs to always go in one spot. She will only go there if taken there. It's in the far corner of our yard, but sometimes, for no apparent reason at all, she just drops and goes along the way. It's not like she has to go really badly, she just goes where she wants. Not only do I not want our new yard destroyed, but it is our wish that someday soon, she can just be let out the door to go to her spot. Am I expecting too much? I don't know if this is even in the realm of possibility. Maybe she's too young. Any feedback would be extremely helpful. Thanks!

You train it essentially the same way that you train them not to go in house, or anywhere else that you don't want them to. So if you are walking her and she starts to go before you get to the spot. Stop her and rush to the right spot, then praise like crazy for going in the spot (just like you would stop her if you catch her in the act inside and take her outside to finish up.) To successfull train this, you will have really watch her outside so you can stop her if she starts to go in the wrong spot - just like for housebreaking indoors, you can't let a pup just roam unattended - you have to be watching to stop an accident in progress.

I agree with VTbxrFan 100%

I also think you are expecting too much too soon from a pup this young. Keep after it and give it time and patience.

You'll get there.

Thanks for the help and encouragement. Bella is not allowed out by herself to potty EVER, and I am doing what you suggested, so we'll just keep it up and hopefully we'll have success. None of my other Boxers ever got the hang of this either, so I was just wanting to know that it does actually work!
