Training Treats?

For Oscar we tried a number of his favorite treats that worked when we were at home but as soon as he got around the other puppies and people those didn't seem to keep his attention. Then our trainer suggested trying the Pet Botanics rolled meat (Petsmart sells it for sure) and Oscar seemed much more receptive to this, plus the trainer also suggested not feeding him or only giving him half of his normal meal before the class that way he would be plenty hungry and the treats would be more tempting to him and that really seemed to work with Oscar we would only give him half of his meal prior to going to class and he was totally interested in the treats regardless of the other puppies or people around. Good luck hope you find something that works.

Treats can be good to train with in the beginning, but if your dog is more interested in playing I would get a tennis ball and use that as a reward. I took my dog for lessons with a police K-9 trainer and that is what he uses. My dog isn't interested in anything but playing with his leash though,

Too true about becoming dependent on treats. I trade off- sometimes Luka gets one, sometimes he doesn't. He seems satisfied with either... just seems hapy to make me happy. But I think it's important to do 1/2 treats, 1/2 praise. To me, praise also enforces a teacher/ student roll and makes him eager to please me.

We have tried a few brands of treats once and had to throw some of them away as they seemed to make Idgie a bit hyper. We found Charlie Bear (Trader Joe's) dry low calerie liver tasting treats that she loves and don't get her hyper. They are also dry so you can have some in your pocket without a mess. I sometimes put a few in her dinner if she is having one of her picky eater days every week or so.
