I am in need of suggestions for training treats that you have found successful. Reese seems to be getting bored with his and I would love to try some new ones to keep his interest up.
I don't know what you've tried already, but my girls LOVE freeze dried liver treats. I had a heck of a time finding a DRY treat that Caney was interested in, but this is it. They come in a large bucket for $19.99 at PetSmart. That bucket has lasted us nearly 6 months. I cut the treats into smaller pieces as soon as I get home with them so they last longer.
They might be sold in other stores too, I was actually surprised to find them at PetSmart because I don't think of them first when looking for things that are "all natural." I was very happy to find these treats though :D
I second the recommendation of the liver treats- Baxter goes CRAZY for these. He is not always food motivated, but once I bought these, he actually goes to the cabinet they're kept in and noses it to let me know he'd like some. Now I use them to make him do what I want!
My friend turned me onto them when we were whittling down his treats/diet and limiting ingredients due to allergies. They kinda stink, but they're healthy for them...
The tub they come in is like a turquoise color.
Zoe, that's a great idea to cut them even smaller- especially since he gets a few at a time!
Thanks!
I bought the tub for Harley's class and also cut them into smaller pieces. He liked them, but boy was he stinky after eating them. Next week, even smaller pieces and fewer of them...
freeze-dried liver is great--that is only for the vet's office and the really difficult commands (down, for some reason). We also use Zuke's natural treats--come in salmon, chicken, and PB and are wheat, corn and soy-free. And I just found out they make cat treats too, so I'm going to have to try those out (not me, but the cats!)
Oh My Goodness! You should have warned me not to open the tub of liver in a car when the outside temp was 95 degrees!! Boy do those things stink
I got home last night with the tub of beef liver and Reese loved them, they are definitely a HIT! Thanks so much for the info, this site is wonderful and you guys are GREAT!
Yes, mine love chicken and cheese also, and I still use that when we're around the house, but I was so glad to find DRY treats that wouldn't spoil, that they liked just as much as the chicken. I actually keep a stash of the liver treats in an old mint tin in my purse, just for those "special occasions" :D
