I have a six month old female, Sindee. For about the last month she has stopped coming when she is called. She will stand there and look at you and then walk the other way. What can I do to convince her that she should come everytime I call her? She has not been to obedience training yet, she will start the next class they have, but I need to know what to do now to teach her to come everytime she is called.
Thanks.

tricia, first you need to make sure you never call her when she is bad. always go to her. then you need to get treats that she likes alot and bribe her. always praise her when she comes. if she does not come turn your back on her let her know you do not want to play that game cause that is what she thinks it is. she is only 6 months old so try not to get to upset she will learn:) good luck and let us know how she does.

well my kadie does the same thing but is 14weeks old, some times she will come when called others she will just look at me, should i be doing the same thing? if she won't come do i show her the treat and bribe her to come to me then give it to her when she does? and even when i don't need to bribe her just keep treats handy and give her a treat when ever she comes when she is called?

thanks,

you also need to praise all the time this way she will learn that it is not only treats and then you can wean her off of treats. also you can still give treats once in a while this way she never knows if her reward is a treat or praise which to her is also a treat. dogs love praise and you can get them to do alot for you with praise that is there reward.

training the "recall" or "come" command must be kept consistent and positive all the time. that means not using the "come" command when you want to give her medicine or trim her nails. she should always associate positive things with the "come" command. try using treats that your dog loves and always make sure you have some handy when you call her. after a while, and i mean several weeks, you can start weaning her off the treats, and substituting more affection instead. try using a higher pitched voice when calling for the "come." dogs associate a higher pitched voice with positive things and approval, compared to lower voices which are interpreted as disapproval and anger.
take it slow and stay positive and consistent. NEVER call your dog to yell at her.
i'm sure you'll see your dog get better after she's enrolled in her obedience class.
