We are thinking of investigating a trainer to work with us and Simon one-on-one. I understand the benefits of a class but am hoping that the one-on-one sessions will help us just as much as Simon. We need personal guidance on how to train. My question is this -- does anyone know a reasonable cost for private training. We are starting to investigate and need a base to go on -- what is an average cost for a trainer? We have gotten some recommendations/names in our area and I need some "cost knowlege" before I give them a call. Thanks

My trainer charges $35 for 45 minutes at the center, $50 for 45 minutes at your home.

We are in the Midwest, if that makes any difference

Smarter than you think by Paul Loeb

Smarter than you THINK by Paul Loeb: Has any one worked with him? I've got his latest book...it goes against the norm, but it makes lots of sense! And what a goal: total control OFF LEASH! He's in NYC and has lots of training experience (40 years). He charges $650 for about 3 hours according to his book. If I had total off leash control it'd be worth it!!:D No more bored pup lolling around in his hated Genlte leader with the teacher still going on and on.

I haven't read this book, but from the reviews I've seen it sounds very much like it is promoting methods that we at Boxerworld don't support - throwing things at your dog to get it to come to you, punishing the dog (up to a year after it has had a potty accident in the house???), hitting dogs to stop a fight, using a match in the rectum to housetrain....not the kind of relationship I want to have with my dogs, at any rate. Apparently the author also states that his way is the ONLY way to train that works, every other training technique is wrong, and that his method will work for every dog. Which we all know is a bunch of hooey ;)

If you read this book, do so with a grain of salt, and keep in mind the many other successful methods that don't involve physical punishment/correction.

When I first researched at-home training, I found a couple of businesses that wanted almost $1000 for an 8 week session. That is one hour, once a week. They also wanted to double that amount because I have two puppies. I was very discouraged to say the least. Thanks goodness my vet recommended someone else. She charges $35/hour straight. Does not matter how many dogs. I will add that if we go over an hour I compensate her accordingly. It is well worth the cost!! Also be sure to investigate what kind of training they offer before hand. The one that was the most expensive also wanted to choke my babies. (ie. choke collar). We are currently using clicker training and it is great! Hope this helps.
