Vinegar

Interesting, you are the second person who has told me to spray her mouth with vinegar when she bites me. I was afraid to do it. Does it cause any harm other than a bad taste? To tell you the truth, ever since our foster came into our home, she no longer bites me. In fact, she pretty much ignores me now. :( She just wants to play with her foster brother all the time. She seems very happy about having a playmate. Do you want to hear the most interesting part? The trainer called me this weekend to schedule our next appointment and I was explaining to him about how we have a new foster dog. He told me that this was a mistake because Lola was going to learn terrible things from the new dog. He said that I should worry about training my own dog before bringing in another one. The funny thing is that Lola has been really good since he came home with us. In fact, the other day we were going to take a walk and I asked them both to sit before opening the door. Lola immediately sat and Halo just stared at me. So Lola went over to him and put her paw on his butt as if to make him sit so we could leave. It was hilarious. fiesta1ico

Unlike many of the people on this thread, I want an obedient dog ( from pricerj7)

well my dog's are very obedient and there was never negative training. you do not have to be negative in any way. when we go to the dog park (off leash) my dog's come to me everytime. and I believe it is because they love and trust me. not fear me in any way.

Our boy Hummer came to us from an all animal rescue at 2 and half years last Aug.
They had very little history on him except he was an owner surrender that had a mentally challenged teenager and apparently either the boy or Hummer played to rough and they were unable to train him.He was in rescue 7 months.
That being said Hummer needed a lot of work. We did basic/beginners obedience classes to form a bond and trust between us.
Its with so much love and pride that I can say he has turned into a great and an obedient dog much to my surprise. While recently at the dog park for our first time no issues, he came to me immediately when called, he even stopped on the edge of the mud when I told him to stop ( he had already had one good roll in it and was caked on).. I've been telling everyone how proud I am of my big boy.
Again the bonding with love and trust is key, a little patience is in order as well, even more so with a rescue dog that may have been shuffled about and have trust issues on top of everything else

Lose the trainer.(that one anyway)

I think positive reinforcement and praise is what helped our boy the most

We attempted crate training in the beginning only used for brief periods (2 maybe 3 hrs max) while I was in and out during the day. He never slept in the crate at night. I did a however use the crate for him when we ate dinner or to contain him and keep him calm while company was over. He was a terrible thief and counter/table stalker he would steel food as soon as you looked the other way. He also was never exposed to small kids so that was our biggest challenge to over come. He did earn brief timeouts (5-10 minutes increments) if he body slammed the kids. He thankfully was a very quick learner and understood not to assault the kids ages 3 & 6. Today 9 months later anyone would think he was raised with the kids.

He has a dominant personality so I followed advise I had gotten from here and else where.
~ I never place myself lower then him.
~I go through an open door first.
~He is never allowed on my bed.
~If he pulls me while walking, I make him immediately sit.

Recall was a challenge and up until this past weekend have just realized how well he's gotten it. At the dog park he comes first call. People even commented to me how well behaved he is. Go figure. This gem sat for 7 mos in rescue. He's awesome and I'm grateful now, I wasn't so sure in the beginning ;)
