Trainer Problem

I am concerned because after reading many posts here, I think I have made a mistake with my choice of trainers. I did a lot of research before choosing a trainer and went with this guy who I thought would be great because he was recommended by a boxer organization.
He has been to my house two times now and I am worried. The first time, we really worked on "no bite" because Lola was biting me like crazy no matter what I did. I had tried all of the methods recommended here and it did not work at all. So he showed me his technique (which I cannot describe here) which did cause her discomfort but got her to stop biting. We worked on other things that day such as wait, etc... None of these used discomfort to teach and she learned them well. I was apprehensive but decided to give him another chance.
Last week he came to my house and he brought one of the collars we cannot discuss here. He then proceeded to show me how to correct her while he taught us curbing. Lola got very upset and reacted terribly. I told him that I did not agree with using that collar and correcting her this way. After all, she is only 4.5 months old and is just being a puppy. I do not want a perfect dog - just one that is good in general. I was in tears after witnessing this.
He told me that the problem was that my dog does not respect me or see me as the leader. He said that these were his methods and that they were the only ones proven to work. He said that with a breed like boxers you have to assert control and this was the way to do it. He said if I do not do this now, when she is big she could hurt me or someone else and I will end up having to give her up for aggression.
I talked to him about the Dog Listener and he said that was a bunch of BS. I have talked to people locally who use him and love him and others who hate him. Basically, the conclusion I have come to is that he is probably good with dogs that already have problem but I do not think he is right for my Lola. I do not know where to go from here. Should I get her into a socialization class or is it too late? Everyone here tells me that the PetCo classes are a waste of time. Can I get some feedback.

I certainly wouldn't have him back.

No puppy socialization class is a waste of time. She may be a little too old. You will have to check and see what their age range is for puppy class.

In the meantime, I would start working on the "no free lunch principle" Start having her work for everything. Sit to go out, sit for food, always go through the door first, don't walk around her, make her move.

Good luck!

When Napoleon was about 8 months, we started puppy obedience classes.
The teacher obviously did not like boxers and said the only way to get their attention was to slap them on the side of the face because they are too spacey to pay attention. We went to two classes and did not go back.
I was so disappointed and angry. Good thing she didn't slap Napoleon or I may be in jail smashicon LOL.

Jees, that's horrible! Slapping my dog on the face would be akin to slapping my kid on the face! Sure, I've only got a pup (14 weeks) - but it's not all that hard to get his attention, not more difficult then any other dog I've been around over the past several years. He chooses to ignore me sometimes when he doesn't want to do something, but we're working on that and making great progress - and I certainly don't need to slap him on the face to do it!

That sounds like the kind of trainer you run - don't walk - away from.

When this guy did all of the "corrections" with Lola she was only 16 weeks old. She was coughing up a storm and rebelling even more. It was horrible. I was in tears and I just cannot bring myself to work with him again.

I would agree - stay away from this guy. Don't go back. In the future trust your instincts as to whether something is okay or see. See if you can get her enrolled in a puppy socialization class, practise training at home, and see whether you can find someone in your area you gives training using POSITIVE training methods.
If you can't find anyone - one of the books that I like is called The Power of Positive Dog Training by Pat Miller.

Good luck!

Those methods will only get your dog to distrust you and become more fearful and possibly agressive in the future. That person who calls himself a "trainer" has no business being around animals (imo).

THAT is the B.S., not The Dog Listener. I have had a few people tell me that I have to use "the collar" and "show him who's boss". BS! I would MUCH rather have a dog that does things for me because he wants to (knows he will be rewarded) than because he is afraid of me (knows he will be punished if he doesn't).

I am always amazed when I hear comments like that coming from an obedience instructor. First of all it's just plain stupid, from business standpoint, to tell someone that their chosen breed of dog is "too dumb to train" or some other such remark. Do they really expect you to come back? Even if they don't particularily like the breed, they should just keep it to themselves and try to help you the best they can. THAT'S what you are paying them for, not their opinion of whatever breed you have. Second, ANY dog can be trained. It's just a matter of how much time and effort you are willing to put into it. Are certain breeds easier to train? While I am no expert, I would say yes. But even within a breed you are going to get fast learners and slow learners. An INSTRUCTOR has no right to discourage anyone from trying to train their dog by making comments like that. If they don't want to take on a difficult student once in a while, then, I say, get out of the business!
