This is being posted in memory of gypsy's best friend Polly are neighbors dog that stayed with us 9to5 Mon-fri until her family arrived home from work. Polly was a border collie mix that touched the hearts of us all, a all around 10 She loved kids and love to run over the entire yard with gypsy they would play for hours. Polly being a mixed breed of just turning 2yrs her family took her in for a spay where tragedy, neglect, and abuse took place they did not know they were putting her in neglectful hands,The nice new clinc was clean and nice but all about money and not the care of polly. Polly was picked up the next day by dad with some pain pills when he got home with polly she couldnt even walk he offered her a peice of steak and she wouldnt touch it so he immediately took her back where she died within 20 min . There was not a sorry or anything just a this happens sometimes it is just a risk. The next day they received a call saying a stitch had fell off and she should have never been released please dont sue me. Polly was taken for autopsy elsewhere finding that she hemmorahged everywhere and had nuerologic damage and large clots around her spine. We may never know what actually took place at that awful clinc but we will never forget for we lost a family member and gypsy lost her pal .

Thats is so upsetting!!!
I had a bad experance with one of those new high dollar clinics a few years back.
I don't recommend them!
We had a stay maltese about 3 years old that I took there.
She to was senthome very sick and with pain pills. It tookher a long time to snap back and after reading your story I'm shocked and guilty that I took her there.
I just thought it was her age.
She is still with us and thank God didn't leave us that day!
Thanks for sharing your story.

That is so sad. A spay is a routine operation. Tess was spayed a month ago and the next day she was back to her normal self. The vets involved must have been so incompetent.

This is so terrible to read and a tragedy that should have been avoided. But people please remember ALL operations carry some risk , even our everyday things like spey and neuters. Of course any animal in the hands of a good and fully competent vet has an extremely good success ratio. Modern drugs and proceedures have all but eliminated problems , but there is always the slim chance something could go wrong. Please make sure you know and trust your vet completely and talk to others who have used that vet and been 100% satisfied. Good vets are worth their weight in gold!

There is a risk associated with any surgery, but I'm shocked by the response from the vet. My own vet would have been outraged at herself, or whoever did the surgery. Even if it were an unavoidable problem, I think most competent vets would experience shock and anger at themselves, at least initially. Your "average" caring, decent, devoted vet would never say, "Oh well, it happens." They work hard to maintain high standards in their practices, and take every unexpected fatality very seriously, not resting until they figure out what they did wrong - what they could do differently next time. Not all vets are that good, unfortunately, but I think most are.

I certainly hope they didn't have to pay for any emergency care!!!!

Thanks for sharing your difficult story. :(

tragedy during spey

i'm not sure how much bearing this would have for vets in usa, but here in australia, when i move to a new town ,after ringing breeders in the phone book asking whom they use and recommend for vet services, i ring the most popular vets and have ask about services stating our finances are very tight (wether they are or not), and the vet that says bring her in and we will work out a payment scedule as her health is the most important thing gets my loyalty. Now i realise that there are some vets that are a bit "dodgy" but i will only ring vets which have been highly regarded by breeders of long standing in the community , so doing this i am getting the best of the best.

I love a vet that puts their patients before money!

When my mother died I took in her CFA Maine Coon cat Max. True to the breed, Max was a big guy who took no gruff. He developed an aural hematoma (called cauliflower-ear in humans, where the tissue seperates from the cartilage in the ear and fills with fluid and blood). So in Max goes for his surgery, and "don't worry Allison, the ear will be fine". Max is a georgous cat that my mother had spend years with different breeders to develop the line that he carries and I didn't want him maimed, even though I had no desire to breed him beyond a few stud services set before my mother's death. Well, the vet knew Max and knew his appearance was important to my mother and promised to do his best, but ended up giving the surgery to another vet because of a hit-by-car emergency that came in first.
To make a long story short, Max came home with a mangled ear. I was appalled at how sore and raw it looked. I was told it would be ok, leave it alone, etc. Now Max has one good ear and one that looks like someone chewed on it. Also they hair never grew back because of all the scar tissue. I love Max, but everytime I look at that horrid ear, I wonder if I did the right thing. Unfourtantly I will never know and I really feel like I let my mother down when it came to her cat. As a side note, I now know from working at a vet's that they can position the ear much like when they crop them so the ear stays stretched and heals correctly and doesnt look all crinkled up like it does now.
