Too young to play with Pitbull????

You can introduce them easily by making sure they are both on leashes. Walk them to each other-not heading straight on but coming from the side. Straight on is just asking for trouble, dogs do that when they are getting ready to fight. If you start off the introduction correctly the first time they can become the best of friends. Keep them on the leash for the first few times they get together-just so you can keep tabs on them. Just remember to keep an eye on them EVERY time they are together even if they are getting along good. Remember wagging tails don't always mean happy dogs.

We have yet to introduce them but as of yesterday I agreed to let them meet hopefully this week.
I asked if my BIL's pit was dog agressive and he says he's not. That was my issue. Two natural males, not to mention Butch lives with 3 little girls and me, Daddy too, so we tend to baby him. Shorty, the pit, live with my bachelor BIL, I just don't know how socialized the dog is and how rough he is. Turns out, Butch has about 15 pounds on him even though he's almost a year younger. LOL
Now that he's older and bigger, I think I'm gonna give it a shot. He would love to have a playmate. I heard of females having problems, is it the same problem for males??

...don't be afraid of a Pitbull just because of the name. If they are both well trained there shouldn't be a problem....unless hormones of adolescent dogs start kicking in. If you are tense about the situation the dogs will pick up on that and react....good luck!

Not so good.
Well, this Sunday was the first meeting. It did not go well. For starters, my BIL's pit was barking and going nuts before he even reached our fence. Once they calmed down we opened the gate. After about 1 second of them sniffing the pit lunged for Butch's neck. It was too scary. My DH grabbed Butch and took him inside where he was safe and all the while he never got angry. He only stood on his hind legs and began swinging but never showed his teeth or got ferocious. He is such a sweetheart and only wants to play. I felt so bad because he was freaking out inside my house when he saw my kids outside with this dog. He was going nuts from window to window inside the house.
All this dog did was drool, bark and growl. He was mad crazy. I swear he would have eaten Butch for lunch.
We all called it a day and they went home.
My BIL said his dog might have been so bad because Butch is a male. I don't know.
Either way, I can't put my dog in danger like that.

Sorry to hear that it went so bad, but please do not use this experience to generalize the breed. Maybe your BIL's pitbull hadn't been socialized properly, hence the aggression. Your BIL should try more socializing with his pit, so if/when your babies meet again, it will be more pleasant.

We had one years ago and she was the sweetest lap dog you'd ever meet. But I would also probably shy away unless I knew how they were raised and only if they were the same age as my pups so they could play the same way (friendly!) I'm way to vain to have one of my pretty pups all marked up for the sake of a playdate!Louise501 said:

I really have tried to give a fair assessment of pit-bulls but they almost always seem to live up to their reputation as untrustworthy. This dog seems people friendly, not dog friendly but I don't think I'd trust him with my children. My BIL says he plays well with his friend's female pit, so maybe it's because my dog is male.
It is certainly not worth the risk for Butch. I was disappointed because all the dogs on my street are seniors and Butch is too rough, I would have liked for him to have a friend but forget that thought.
Oh well, I'm glad my mushy guy is not an aggressive dog.

Is your dog or the pit neutered? I have seen many many pits fight because of that alone and i'm sure you're right about them both being male. It's extra hard when it's a family member's dog because you trust their judgement that they will get along but like you learned it's not always the case! If you want a playmate you might have to just get another Boxer!!! That's what we did! Like I said we had a pit and she was sweet as could be but sometimes it can be a tricky breed. I also would not bring my children around that dog especially after you saw him show his true colors. Be safe!!!!jksjkc said:I had that same thought!
