Too young to play with Pitbull????

My brother-in-law has a 1 year old pitbull. He's around 35-40 lbs and so is my Butch, but Butch is only 19 weeks old. I am afraid to have them play, they are both males, not yet neutered.

My brother-in-law asked my mother-in-law if we'd ever let them meet eachother. I am scared for Butch, what if things can get out of hand? I wouldn't want to put him in that kind of danger. Pitbulls scare the hell out of me. I know that's a generalization but I can't help it if that's my fear.

I am over-reacting? Should I let them play?

Dempsey has played with my sister's neighbor'ss pitbull since he was very small. I can't remember when they first started playing ( I guess around 15 weeks). This pit is the most gentle creature and let Dempsey run all over him and box him all over. I would be completely sure that the other dog (whatever breed) will be completely patient with your pup, has all shots up to date, and make sure you monitor clossely. Good luck!

I'm glad you asked about the shots because I didn't think of that. My Butch has had all of his shots, but I didn't think to ask my BIL if his dog had all of his shots.

I guess I'm nervous because the Pit, his name is Shorty, is an adult and Butch is still a puppy. He can be a little crazy with his paws and some adult dogs get mad at that. Two weeks ago he was bit by a Golden at Petsmart and he didn't even do anything wrong. So I'm very nervous. Butch is such a mushy little love bug. We call him our big Chooch. I still carry him around like a baby and he loves it.

I still don't know what to do. I don't want to hurt my BIL feelings, but he's a bachelor and I don't know want kind of socializing or training he's done with the dog.

i just wanted to tell you that i worry very much too about Keeroff playing with adult dogs... of any breed.
this is a thread about seeing adult dogs(male not neutered) growling at Keeroff because as a classic boxer he uses his paws too much

it is not so much a matter of breed. however, im also afraid of pit bulls. dont forget they have the most strong teeth of all breeds.
but it is mostly a matter of the adult dog's caracter and patience with pups.

My Finny has been playing with my coworker's pit bull, LiLu, since he was 9 weeks old. He chewed on her tail and they chased eachother around the house. Pits are extremely loving and gentle as long as they are brought up in the right environment. Just make sure you keep an eye on them just in case they start playing too rough, and have a broom handy because hair will be flying everywhere!

Lily started playing with a 1 year old pit bull when she was only around 10 weeks old or so. They got along great. The great thing about pit bulls is everyone we have met plays like a Boxer and use thier paws just as much in playing. I'm sure as long as the pit is well socialized there shouldn't be any problems

In my experience, I would be more worried about your baby hurting the pit than the other way around. Boxers tend to play extremely rough! Tucker played with my ex-husband's pit with no problems at all. If anything, I felt sorry for Charlie (the pit) because Tucker kept knocking him over. But, Charlie never lost his temper. So, I believe so long as your BIL has raised his pit propperly, you have nothing to worry about as far as the breed is concerned.

It might also make you feel better to research Pitbulls. Do a google search for Pit rescues. They are full of information about the true personality of the breed - which is far from what the media has everyone believing.

When I lived at my old place my next door neighbor had a rescue Pitbull. The pit was beat by his previous owner but was the sweetest most gentle dog in the world. Roxie played with him when she was just 12 weeks. The pit was aout 80 pounds and was great with Roxie. Roxie also played with a pup pit who was more rough than the adult. The best advice is make sure when they meet that it is a controlled environment. Let them sniff first and test it out. Always keep and eye on them but you will tell with in the first 5 min whether they will play together nice or not. I love pits they are so sweet. I guess I am byass because I used to have a boxer/pit mix. Good luck and hope everything works out.

I have a boxer/pit bull mix and she is one of the sweetest dogs I have ever met. It is actually Samson, my boxer, who plays rougher with the paws. She has picked up on it more now and has learned some tricks from him. They are very well matched together. I think it is all a matter of how the pit bull is socialized.

i cant believe im in the same situation now. but it is about TWO pit bulls. 9 years old and 5 years old. i also dont know what to do! :confused:
