Has anyone else had trouble with their boxer's toenails splitting or cracking? Koda's cracked. I called the vet and take him in tomorrow, they said they may have to remove it? Is this normal?? What can I expect?? What causes this? Sorry so many questions, I'm just worried about my boy! He just had his nails clipped by the vet not too long ago. Thanks for any info!

Koda~2.5 yr male, fawn, black mask, white socks, natural ears

I don't know what causes it, but my Rottie used to have that problem. We started rubbing her paws and nails with hoof lotion, and that really helped.

Thanks

Thank you for your reply! It looks terrible and I know it hurts him. I pray that when the vet looks at it that they can fix it without surgery, they said they may have to remove it. And with the way he is about his nails, I highly doubt he'll allow them to mess with it while he's awake!

Poor Koda, that really hurts!
Don't know if this helps, but Jazz has had strange things happen to her nails:
- split up the middle (this nail had to be removed by the vet...sounds like Koda's; in this case did not need anesthetic and it was very quick)
- cracked/broke way up near the toe (this one came off by itself
- several growing out at weird angles

Broken nails sure can bleed like crazy, every time they walk on them it starts back up. Until you get to the vet, it could help to put something on it to help coagulate the bleeding then put a clean old sock on that foot.

Yes! Beau's nails break and crack a lot. And he had to have one of his nails cut back to the skin because it was so cracked and sore. It's growing back out nicely though. He did have to be anesthetized though.

I'll have to try rubbing his nails with hoof lotion. Where does one get hoof lotion??

Back from the vet...

Koda didn't have to be put under (thank goodness) the vet just cut the nail all the way back to the skin and gave him antibiotics so that he doesn't get a bone infection and need his toe removed.

Deuce had his 2nd set of shots, he had more than doubled his weight in 2 wks! He was 6 lbs then and he's 16 lbs now! Is he growing too fast? The vet didn't say anything but I just don't want him to become over weight and then have hips troubles, etc...

My dogs nails ALL came off. The local vet school cultured one and found a bacterial infection that was not a typical bacteria. She had to take special antibiotics and have her feet washed twice a day. That was over a year ago. Her nails are just now to the end of her quick. They are still flaking off. The vet did say to use a dremel instead of clipping - not that she has any nail to clip.

I will have to try to hoof oinment.
