The vets go on at you saying it's a good idea because of some cancers etc but then they say oh she's 4 stone (25kg) that will be £170.00 ($300.24) my god how much do they want to charge
Does anyone know of any schemes in UK

Thanks

Weeell, it's not just breast cancer that spaying reduces the risk of (although it does dramatically reduce that risk). There are other tumours an intact female is at risk of, and also pyometra to worry about with every heat cycle... The costs of treatment for any of those diseases would run into the thousands, and can still kill. Pets are expensive - that's just how it is, and we all know it before we buy.

As for low-cost or subsidised schemes in the UK, yes they exist. Check with your vet office to see if there are any schemes running in your area (Note that these are likely to be restricted to those unable to cover the cost of spaying their pets, not those who don't want to). I know there are pamphlets about that in my vet's office...

You could also do a search online. Here is one link that I found, no doubt there are others:
http://www.friendsoftheanimals.co.uk/default2.htm
And this one, which is actually about cats, but gives a list of low-cost spay/neuter clinics - I'm sure they do dogs too: http://www.catchat.org/neuter.html#lowcost
I believe you can also ask your local RSPCA for vouchers to assist with the cost of spaying/neutering.

Incidentally, if you're not already aware, do ensure that whatever vet you use knows that boxers cannot be given Acepromazine. Ace is a commonly used pre-anasthetic sedative, but it is known to cause heart failure in boxers. If a sedative is required, an alternative such as valium should be used on this breed.

I know pets are expensive it just seems to me that a routine operation (there words not mine) but one that is done on a regular basis should not cost £170 just seems so high

I can afford it in the eyes of the government as in I'm not on the dole or a immigrant (more free stuff and rights for them) but it's still a massive outlay

Just now wish I had done it when she was younger cause it would of been cheaper

Damn you live and learn

Hey,
I don't know how it works in the UK, but I just signed Sascha up for pet health insurance. It was about 300 for the whole year, and they cover part of all of her vaccinations and part of her spay, as well as flea and heartworm prevention and any random illnesses that may pop up. If the money is an issue, it might be worth at least looking into this. I use vpi, which was recommended by my vet. I don't know if that is available outside of the us though...either way, good luck. I was also surprised by how much they charge for the spay.

Have you tried looking out for special offers at different veterinary practices. We got Jazz spayed in January. Our normal vet quoted a price of around £170-£180 and then a friend told us that another place not too far away were offering half price spay/neutering for a short amount of time (to attract customers I guess), so we only ended up paying about £80 and have stayed with them ever since.
