To register or not to register?

I have a question. I have my pup, Millie, and I have her papers to complete and send to the AKC. I am planning on getting her spayed in about 3-4 months and therefore have no intention of breeding her. She is just going to be a pet. So what I'm wondering is if there is a point to registering your dog if you don't plan on breeding them and if I should go ahead and register her even though she's just going to be my baby and not a show dog?

I wouldn't worry about it - especially if you are not showing or participating in any AKC registered events like agility or obedience.

There are some advantages to AKC registration even if you are not going to show or breed. Registration will get you some good newsletters and access to breed information if that interests you. There is also a free trial [90 days if I remember right] of health insurance for your dog, with considerable discounts on the insurance rate should you decide to keep the policy. The AKC also frequently sends me really good coupons for pet supplies like food, toys and even an annual one for heartguard. The heartguard coupon alone makes it worth it since that med is charged based on the size of your dog.

The paperwork and cost to register are minimal, so if you are on the fence about it I say go ahead and send it in.

Oh crap - I forgot all about that! Along with some of the stuff the above poster mentioned, I got about $40 in gift certificates from dog.com - so if you want all the goodies, then go for it.
