Tires quickly from heat?

My 5 month old boxer boy seems to tire quickly while walking with me after work. It is rather hot and humid here (Arkansas) but I'm not talking about jogging, just walking. We were at the vet not long ago and he says he's doing great but this quick tiring has me a little worried.

Is is just because of the heat/humidity or maybe a 5 month old just doesn't have the endurance yet. I know boxers aren't real tolerant of heat (or extreme cold) but my first boxer which I lost back in January at the age of 10 really didn't seem to tire this quickly.

Should I have him checked out at the vet or is this normal? His energy level in the house is off the scales but heat just seems to zap him.

I live in Sydney, where the heat probably doesn't get AS HOT as Arkansaw, and my 1 year old always gets slowed down by the heat.

She doesn't show the same sort of fervour when it comes to summer walking... Perhaps check it with your doctor, but I think it is normal.

I guess the question is, how soon DOES she get tired?

Good Luck!

I have often wondered if I should have my Bingo looked at also. He will literally drop on me, find some shade and lay down, if I try to walk him more than a block or two if it's over 70 degrees. He is three years old and has always been like this but any situation in heat just zaps him also. He has no stamina at all but can go forever in the spring, winter and fall. It's just the heat. I was wondering if it was unusual also because he is SO EXHAUSTED, but I think it's just how he is. He is brindle also so the black on him makes it worse. In the summertime, we don't walk him at all unless we have to because he just can't take it. I just think some are better with it than others. We helped a stray husky the other day when it was like 100 % humidity and while she was here at our house, my poor Bingo couldn't even keep up with her. I was amazed at how she was handling the heat, short pants and tongue not really hanging out that much,,,then there was my poor Bingo, spent, trying to put his tummy on the shady grass to cool him off!!!! :D

I think some boxers deal with heat much better than others. You probably have one that doesn't like it hot. As long as your vet has checked him out and can't find anything wrong, I wouldn't worry about it. Go for your walks, either early in the morning or late at night. :)

Keep Cool

Well, it's always 90+ and higher heat index here. We do our "excercise" walks early in the a.m. and late at night. In between, it's business only. Even then, sometimes when we get inside and hit the A/C, he drops and spreads on the marble floor and won't move for minutes! When we go to the park, I always carry cool water--both for drinking and for pouring over Diablo to cool him down. I understand your concern, I've read hot, humid is difficult for short-snouted breeds. I've decided not to push my pup, as I don't know how much is his desire to stay outside, and how much is because he's hot:p

Here in the Philadelphia area, we get some nasty hot and humid weather also. Tiger cannot stand those days!! He will tire out about 15 minutes after the starting our walk, lying down in the shade and not wanting to get back up.

As the weather here is getting hotter, we are only taking him for his longer walks in the early am and late pm. He's doing much better. Because we live in an apartment community, he has to walk a bit before he can do his business, but he is slowly getting used to it.

And as soon as he gets inside, he sprawls out on the lenolium floor panting like crazy!

The same way

Here in Atlanta, GA is the most Humid place in the world in my opinion. Mia has done surprising well in the heat. I have noticed that walks do not bother her to bad, but playing with my fathers dogs really zap her. She will only play for about 15 minutes and then has to drink tons of water and then "Frog-Dog" spread on the floor. You all know what I am talking about regarding "Frog-Dog?" That is the cute sprall when thier back legs look like a Frog. :) IT crakes me up when she does that. I would not worry about it, I think it is normal. Just be sure to give lots of water during the summer months.

Thanks for all the replies. Maybe I'm just being a little over protective but he is my best buddy. I'll just watch him over a couple of days and if he really seems to be really suffering from the heat then I'll run him by the Doc this weekend for a quick checkup.

Thanks again guys, I'll try not to worry too much in the future.

Ruby doesn't tolerate the heat well either. She gets quite lethargic in the heat and just wants to lie around. She does like to lie in the sun though, but not for too long. She seems to know how much she can handle. When it gets really hot, we stick to early morning and late evening walks or try to walk in the bush where it's cooler. Lots of water and I'm going to try ice cubes in a bowl for her and see how she likes that. Also when she's hot, we take her to the beach and she loves to play in the water. We're still working on the swimming thing though. I'm hoping to have her swimming this summer. She's so close to doing it, just needs that tiny bit more confidence :)
