Baxter's dad

Boxer Buddy
Hi all,
As I mentioned in earlier posts, Baxter (6 months) apparently caught kennel cough from the "community watering hole" at our local dog park. This was 2 months ago. We took him to our vet & he received a kennel cough shot & anti-biotics. 2 weeks later, no better. We took him back 2 weeks ago & they x-rayed his chest & said it looks like he has an infection in his trachea so they gave him stronger anti-biotics & cough suppresant. He still has this cough. We are taking him back to the vet tommorow, but I feel that we are over medicating him with no sucess. Has anybody had this problem??? Any suggestions??? We are going CRAZY!!!

Thanks,
Baxter's dad

If all he had was kennel cough, the first dose of anti-biotics wouldn't have done any good as kennel cough is caused by a virus and antibiotics don't work on viruses. Also giving the vacination for kennel cough when she was already sick, probably wouldn't have helped. Vacinations should only be given to heathly animals. They usually don't take when given to an animal that is sick. :(

Now they are saying he has an infection in his trachea? That sounds a bit vague. I would get a second opinion.

I second Jan's opinion. None of our vets here will even talk about giving a vaccination of any kind to a sick dog! Kennel Cough should be gone in about 2-3 weeks, tops. My two dogs had it develope into pneumonia so I would get on it right away with a different vet. How is he acting? Is he just hacking but playing normally? Or is he sluggish, acting sick, etc? Does he have a fever?

We had the exact same problem. They gave Gracie on antibiotic but that did not work, they did a tracheal wash and found a different antibiotic. When they switched to the new one she got better.

Try another vet maybe?
