Just wondered if anyone had any tips or knows of a good website that can help me with my resume and/or cover letter. I am having such a hard time with this, and I really need to find a new job. Any help is much appreciated:)

Spell check. Whatever you do--make sure there are no typos, spelling errors, or obvious grammatical errors.

Decide what type of position you are applying for and tailor your resume for that type of position--that is, highlight skills in your previous jobs that will be beneficial to this position and put the types of skills you possess and will need for this position at the top of your skills list.

Make sure the resume is laid out neatly, spaced consistently, and is clean--enough white space so it isn't overcrowded.

Try to keep it on the shorter side by using concise sentences and by not including extraneous information.

Depending on where your life, think about which areas you want to put first--for example, if you graduated from college/high school 10 years ago and have been working consistently since, put education at the end of your resume because work experience is more relevant and recent. If you just graduated, put your school information before work experience unless you've been working steadily in your field since you've been in school.

I just got a power point presentation about resumes and cover letters from a workshop we had at school. I can send it to you if you like, just PM me :)

this may sound silly, but whenever we are hiring we always notice this! if you are going to give an email address, make sure it sounds professional. we literally received a resume from a guy whos email address was "killpuppy@.....com" of course my supervisor looked at me and said...do you think we should hire him...

Shannonmac- that's too funny! Fortunately, my email address does not contain the intent to kill, maim or otherwise threaten anyone or anything:)

I had a career prep class and my instructor was completely against using a template for your resume. If you can create a unique but organized format it shows that you have better computer skills. You can use a template to get the pertinant info, but try to make it from scratch.

The ceo of my mom's company said the best resume he ever read was only a half page. if youve got skills, which im sure you do, you dont NEED to fill a whole page. Get down the pros and leave out the clutter and you'll be golden! :)
