Hey guys,

Tyson turned one in August so I figured its about time to start getting him into a full blown exercise regime (Up until now we've been going for long walks and of course the dog park and various other places where he can run around).

I'm lucky enough to live on some awesome running trails in Houston and I go running almost every evening (around 4 miles). I reeeeeally need some tips on how to get him to run next to me without getting distracted and pulling. He also likes to run in front of me causing me to nearly eat it a couple of times. I've been putting up with it and trying to teach him - the running has really brought out his definition and he started gaining quite a lot of muscle. I just want to make this a more efficient and enjoyable experience for him AND me.

Thanks for any feedback!

-Chris

take treats with you and when he is in the position you want him reward him with a good dog and a treat. it will take some time but they learn fast. also with the taking off part...teach him the leave it command and keep moving. again reward him when he leaves it.

just a quick suggestion. i would ease him into the 4 mile run with you. maybe do a run walk for a bit then run for a mile then a run walk until he is able to do the 4 miles with you without to much problem. Just like us they have to work into that type of a workout.

enjoy running with your boy. Nala and i run or walk every day. she absolutely loves it and if i take a day off she pouts. its is so funny.

First he needs to learn to walk nicely beside you, before you can expect him to jog nicely. You have another six months to practice as you shouldn't be doing any forced exercise until he is 18 months old. Before that you risk doing damage to bones and joints.

I'm aware of the 18 month stipulation and the growth plates. I only take him for a mile and bring him back home before continuing. I'm pretty sure if I took him more than that he would not be a happy camper.

The treating suggestion sounds like a good idea - I'll give it a try. I've been using that when we walk to keep him by my side and on a loose leash.
