yesterday at the park I met a 1 yr old Boxer girl who weighed about 40 pounds. She was pretty slight and made my 80 pound bruiser look like a horse. Now I know they all come in different shapes and sizes, but doesn't that sound awfully skinny for a year old dog? Her ribs were sticking out and you could see her hips. But she was of a smaller build, so maybe it was ok. But she did look awfully skinny. Does a 40 pound 1 yr old girl strike anyone as too small?

Jenn,

It's not too small if her frame is smaller. Murphy, my female, is pretty tiny for a full-grown boxer (she's only 45lbs at 4 years old). My other boxer, Seamus, is a very big boy, he's right at 100 lbs and not an ounce of fat on him.

If she was a taller and larger framed boxer weighing only 40lbs at a year old, I would definately worry. Murphy's ribs stuck out (not bad, just showed a little) until she was past two years old, and it was not for lack of eating - it was because she was so damned hyper! :p At four years old, she's finally calming down (thank goodness).

It's funny because people always ask me if I have a miniature boxer (mostly because Seamus is so big, and she looks like dwarf next to him). I usually just laugh and shake my head and explain that they come in all shapes and sizes.

Hope that helped.

I have a tiny girl, she's also very hyper. I was worried when she was about one year old and asked the vet who said she was a good size for her build (she's short too). She said you should be able to see the rib cage just slightly when you can't they're overweight. So I don't worry now.

I also have people saying ah look, a puppy when she is next to Frank, as being male, he is quite a bit bigger than her.

My boxer at 11 weeks weighed in at 14.5 lbs at the vet. His ribs, hips, every bone is showing. But at the same time he also looks very muscular. I was really worried about him last week, mostly because he was not eating as much as I thought he should, but he seems to be eating enough now, and he hasn't filled out any more. I think he's just growing so fast and running around so much that he can't put any puppy fat on. But it does worry me how this might affect his size or his health later. Do you think 14.5lbs is too small for an 11 week old male? He gained 2 lbs in a week but it must be all length, he looks just as skinny as before... Is he going to be a runt? :( Someone at Petco said their Boxer was bigger than him at only 8 weeks!! Could this be true???

I have a white female boxer who is almost 8yrs old and wieghs 47lbs aprox. She looks great for her size. When my 1.5 year old was a pup she was eating all his puppy chow and got up to 51.5lbs. She was fat and did not get around very well. She has always been hyper and runs fast. Not then she did not. I was able to get her weight down with diet. My Rocky weighs in at about 85lbs. Now he would not look good at 40lbs.

Thin is thin

Hi Jenn-- I just got back from my Vet today -- check up on mast tumor -- (got another one removed today -- Boxers are prone to that -if your get them early then you can beat it- )my concern too was wieght I think Lisa looks too thin -- My Vet told me "Cait-- you should see the ribs slightly and that she is in great shape "(I wanted to add a few calories to her diet like a can of SD active) he told me that Boxers should not -- but a lot do get over weight -- I have the tendency to put wieght on my babies-- he told me DON"T MAKE HER FAT! I thought that the Mast tumors size of a pencil top eraser -- was the reason that she doesn't gain he said no-- that boxers come in all sizes and that she is perfect(I already knew that!:D ) -- she wieghs 51 lbs and is almost 3 yrs old. -- But always keep your eyes open for those demons that treat animals bad-- and starving to death is the worse in my opinion-- Thanks

Princess is a year old and weight is approximately 47 pounds.
She looks lean through the body but has the standard muscular shoulders, legs etc. And her vet says she is the picture of health....just a smaller girl.

Our Phoebe looks a little thin at 11 weeks as well, she is right around 14-15 lbs i'd guess (she goes to the vet again on monday, so she'll get weighed then). she has gained a lot of muscle but we can see her ribs and hips, the last couple weeks i really thought she was too thin, but her eating has really increased this week, the vet said she looked great at 9 weeks and from what i've read on the board, she seems to be doing just fine. hope this helps )

Completely Boxer Crazy
Just for the record I weighed Monty today. He is two and weighs 70pounds. His sibling Sophie weighs 45 pounds. She is so tiny but so full of energy. There is not an ounce of fat on either of them. She can race off but Monty has the power to out stride her, therefore catching her. Lots of people think Sophie is still a pup, someone said are they father and daughter, they couldn't beleive they were brother and sister.
