Hey BW,

Our new pup, Captain, keeps having his rear legs slide out on our tile floors because his feet simply don't grip. It seems like his hips hit the tile pretty hard. Also, he sometimes does the boxer hop and has his front legs slide out upon landing leading to his jaw hitting the floor rather hard. Needless to say, we are concerned. Does anyone out there have experience with this and found a remedy short of new floors. I was thinking about shoes, and I'm pretty sure that would do the trick once he was used to them but I'm wondering if there are other solutions out there. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

My dog learned that running, etc and the hard floors didn't mix. I also keep both fo their nails short which helps. I guess you could do rugs but I have a couple and they just slide so they don't really do anything.

Brutus has come to like the tile floors to slide on. He will sometimes get a running start into the kitchen for a toy then slide to a stop. He has a couple of times hit the cabinets because he could not stop in time but it has never really hurt him. We have considered putting rugs in there so if he just wants to sit in there with us he won't be sliding the whole time.

Lily will only walk on tile or slippery floors. She will only play on the carpeted areas.

I have found a company called Flor that makes awesome carpet tiles that are not slippery. They are carpet on a rubber back. It's pretty cheap and fashionable patterns and colors to make an area rug. They are like 18-19" square and a 2tile x 3 tile makes a nice size rug. I have bought enough to carpet my whole living room. I also duct-taped all the seams so they are now waterproof and not ruin my wood floors if any accidents happen. They are also easy to clean. I use my carpet shampooer every week and for any tough stains, I take the tile to the car was and use the tire cleaner spray. LOL

They are really a great design and perfect for housetraining!

Their site is Flor.com

You can find some kits or small box sets on ebay, but limited to patterns.

Your baby will learn that running on tile will result in "wipe out"
When our laminate floors were installed 4 years ago, Napoleon could not understand why all of a sudden his feet would not stay under him when he was going around something...

Now, if he needs to run, he almost tip toes until he can get on a rug...
he is so funny to watch, especially if he is in a really big hurry and can't get anywhere...

Thanks for all the input, everyone. Area rugs are not really an option as it's a pretty large space. I guess we'll wait it out and see if he figures it out while at the same time encouraging him to play elsewhere.

Rugs are a great option, IF your baby will leave them alone.
Mine will not, they drag them into other rooms, outside, etc.

It is worth a try.

good luck~
