It's Tick Season...arggghh! Unfortunatly our Northern California Ticks are completely unfazed by the Frontline that we use on our dogs...our Boxer and Boston are being attacked on our daily romps in the foothills of Mt. Diablo. Most of the time we can catch the nasty buggers before they bed into the skin (we check them right after they go on their walks), but occationally these nasty buggers get really stuck in there...any suggestions on how to help get them out? And, when the heads break off what can you do (other than take them to the vet--which is costly)?

The easiest method that I have found to remove embedded ticks from both, boxers and their humans is to get the ticks drunk. Soak a cotton ball in drinkable alcohol, any whisky, vodka, gin, etc works. Soak the tick with the contents of the cotton ball. I haven't found that ticks have any taste or preference in their booze. Give the tick a couple of minutes to absorb the alcohol, and it'll pretty well let go, allowing you to very gently pull it out. Rubbing alcohol and denatured alcohol will also work but aren't nearly as much fun to describe. I think that denatured alcohol may be harder on the dog/human nervous system as well.

I used about two shots of cheap whisky to remove more than a hundred ticks from Lucy Lou, Renton, my brother and myself after and ill advised walk in Kansas. The California ticks that I met in the Fort Irwin area couldn't hold their liquor either.

Enjoy the walks.

Wow, I wish I would've known that about a month ago. Austin had this tick on his back-I thought it was another tumor since it was filling up, till one night my husband yanked that sucker off with it's little legs flailing around. Who knows how long it had been there. Thankfully it didn't seem to hurt Aus when it came off, but getting it drunk probably would have been easier!
