ticks are everywhere in California
If you have small children, I don't think this is recommended, but there is a new spray from either the makers of Frontline or Advantic(?)... that you can spray on your pup before outside exursions. I would just be mindful if you allow your pup on furniture and such in the house... Your vet probably has a lot of helpful information on this, and that is where you can get this product. I dog walk in pastures here in CA, and if I don't spray this on prior to the walks, the dogs (more on long-hair) come back with litterally dozens of ticks. If you are in a heavily populated area (ticks), the spray won't prevent them from completely getting on your pup, but it will help prevent latching.
also a good resource: via your county - the local mosquito / tick abatement program. they usually have very good information and statistics on the # of ticks in your area that could possibly carry lyme and other yucky stuff. At the local abatement ctr here, you can take a tick to them (if you find one on yourself or dog) and have it tested. If you are part of a dog club or something like that, you can also probably arrange a little workshop w/ them to get some hands on education about ticks.
good luck - be safe.
