Threapy dog.....

Anyone trained their boxer to be a therapy dog... I would love for him to do this and I know we have to go through regular training and the good citizen test...what is after all that...I also know I have to wait for him to be a year...Just hoping someone has more info for me....also do they really calm down enough to be able to go through with all of this?? He is so hyper sometimes (of course he is 5 mo old!!!)...

No, but my dogs sure could use some therapy themselves!! Any dog psychiatrists out there?

My Sandy is not a certified therapy dog but she loves being with people. It is almost like she knows when to calm down. When she is around someone that doesn't feel well she will just sit beside them and let them pet her.
I have been told several times I should take her to classes. I was thinking about it in the spring.

You can check with the AKC or a trainer in your area. They should know who to contact.

I brought our seven month puppy along with us when we recently went to visit my father-in-law at the nursing home. I called ahead and was told to frist bring a note from her vet stating that she was up to date with all her shots, and that she was of good temperament. She was further tested by one of the RTs on staff before we got the okay. She was a huge hit with all the residents, and my usually energetic pup remained calm and well behaved for our two hour visit. ~ Cathy

I have also looked into this. If you do a search on the web you can come across various organisations that support and help with this. You are correct with the training your dog needs, he also needs to pass a therapy dog training test to qualify. It seems to be a pretty high standard, but nothing he shouldn't have learnt in CGC.
