Hi. I haven't been on her for a loooooooooooooooooong time but I'm back now! lol

Anyways, I've been looking for a Boxer and I found one that isn't to far away from where we live. I might be able to adopt him (as in, I have to convince my mom and dad which might never happen or might take a while) but I have a question. Artie (the Boxer's name) is deaf. How difficult is it to live with a deaf dog? I don't think it would be to difficult but any info or tips on living with a deaf dog would be greatly welcomed.

P.S. Here is the beautiful guy! http://www.petfinder.com/pet.cgi?ac...a3a-app2&display=&preview=1&row=0&tmpl=&stat=

I fostered two non-hearing boxers and found both to be pure joys. I don't think it would be much different for most seasoned, responsible dog owners.

I used hand signs from obedience and ASL, must be proactive in training- can't just sit on your duff calling out at a dog which usually does no good anyway but certainly does no good for a non-hearing dog, use safety sense- never off leash unless in a safely contained area, and I would always be sure to place a non-hearing boxer in a home with another dog. They get a lot of info and companionship from their housemate.

You can find quite a lot on non-hearing boxers through rescue sites or a google search. Both that I trained were very bright and very intune with me. Love is a universal language for sure!

Artie is adorable. I noticed he did well on his temperment test. One of the best tempermented boxers I have ever met was a deaf male boxer. Just amazing.

Thanks for the info! Somebody off of another website I'm a member on, gave me the adress to the DDEAF website. That has helped a bunch. I guess mainly my only concern about having a deaf Boxer would be this: if my little siblings (Melanie is 4, Wes & JeanAnne are 9) touch him without him knowing they are in the room, would he snap?

Completely Boxer Crazy
There are two schools of thought on this. Some folks say that you should startle a deaf dog repeatedly and then reward them so that they get used to it. Others say you shouldn't startle the dog. I am currently fostering a very, very sweet deaf guy and I opt not to startle him if I can help it. If he is sleeping, I try to wake him gently or allow him to wake on his own.

There are a couple of disadvantages with Artie, though. He is being offered by a shelter and not a rescue, so you may want to contact the shelter and ask if any temperament testing has been done and what the results were. I say that not as a knock on a shelter, but obviously getting a dog from a shelter is different because you just don't get as much information. Your youngest sister is four and that is sort of a borderline age in my opinion. Our rescue generally will not place a stray dog with a child that young. And we have many other requirements for adopting a deaf dog. It's a big responsibility to take on, but well worth it if you have the right tools and can provide the right environment.

I would really like to adopted a Boxer!

I was looking around to adopt before I got Mina. We talked to a lady on Long Island (NY) who was part of a boxer rescue here. She asked us some questions and the next day when she was supposed to bring the White Boxer Boy over to my house, all of a sudden said No you are not able to adopted this dog all because I did not have a fully fenced in yard. Even after assuring her that I have Never Lost a dog here Ever and how loved He would have been. I was in tears, I felt that I was punched in the stomach. She didn't even come to meet me or to see our home here and how well I treat my other dogs, to have a flat out NO like that just hurt me. I took it personal. I understand that there are guidelines but shouldn't rescues be more in WHO is adopting. And besides Boxer do not belong outside in the heat or the cold. We have an acre of land and have a run that is 1/2 way threw the land. I would LOVE to adopt a Boxer because there are so many that need a good home and my heart just melts for these faces how can I adopted a Boxer and How do I know how the adopted dog will be with my 8 month old female Boxer, and a 9 year old Chihuahua??
