Completely Boxer Crazy
Last night I had to take Belle to the emergency vet because she developed breathing problems. They admitted her in order to keep her stable so she could be re-evaluated by the cardiologist this morning. I heard from the cardiologist a few hours ago, and the news is not good. Belle has dilated cardiomyopathy, but when they did a new ultrasound, they found that she now has a blood clot in her heart. The cardiologist is not very hopeful, and believes we should consider euthanasia. I just am not at that point right now, but my regular vet wants me to think of Belle, and the possibility she might have a painful death. I am so upset, I just don't know what to do. I plan on picking Belle up later this afternoon from the ER, and I will bring her home and take things one day at a time for now. The cardiologist is going to start Belle on aspirin therapy for the clot. In addition, she is adjusting the dosages of lasix, enalapril, digoxin and sota
she is currently taking, and adding in a new medication called mexiletine. She also wants us to submit a compassionate use request to the FDA to request the use of a drug called pimobendan (Vetmedin). This is just such an overwhelming situation, and I don't want to make any decisions until I have a chance to bring Belle home and see how she is doing. She made it through the initial crisis of her illness, so I know she is a fighter. I just pray that she has the same strength and fortitude to overcome what she is going through now.
