SidsMama

Boxer Pal
Ok, so, it took me literally 5 minutes to train Sid how to shake. He's been with me and i've been training him for 10 WEEKS on how to pee outside, does he get it? NO!!!!

Oh well, I guess I'll have a peein' in the house, shakin' on command dog!

that is funny! we have no problem with pottying, but woo-wooing is a MUST for maximus! we taught them to "speak", and it took like 5 seconds to learn it... we out of the blue decided to try it, and of course, they caught on immediately. now, the only problem is, when we tell them to sit/stay, they bark, anticipating we're gonna tell them "speak!" then we have to tell them shhhh, quiet, before we give them the command! but yeah, i totally understand! they're the funniest babies!!

Ally is the same way. Her default trick is to play dead. When she doesn't want to do what I ask her to do, or when she gets confused, she just plays dead:) Don't you just LOVE them?

mguiette,

Just curious on how you trained your dogs to speak. Ry's got the basics down sit/stay, down, and he learned shake really fast. We're still working on come w/ distractions. I would just like to know the method to teach speak. This is our first boxer and we love that boxer howl. Any advice you could give us would be great. Thanks in advance.

titansdad,
congrats on your first boxer! well, it was actually easy for us and "speak".... we had them both sit/stay, held a treat up for them to see (while staying) and told them "speak." they understood it was a command, but didn't know which one-- it did take several tries. axle was funny... he would give a silent bark, with the slobber of course! when they barked, while at sit/stay, we gave them treats and praise! for the next few days, every time we gave them a treat, we made them sit/stay, then told them speak (routine is ALWAYS a plus!). on the other hand, their mama, cherub, will NOT speak for anything! ben's mom could not get her to do it, so i was suprised when the boys did! good luck, and let me know if this helps at all!

Titansdad,

Teaching to speak can sometimes be difficult. Ally happens to be a very vocal dog. I have been able to teach her to speak (which is a loud bark) and to talk (which is her wooing) on command. I taught her to speak by playing with her favorite toy. I noticed that she LOVED to bark at this one squeaky toy, so I would hold it up and squeak it and tell her to speak. If she made the slightest sound, I would make a huge deal out of it. Ally responds to play just as good as she responds to treats and praise. I would alternate between treats and playing with the toy when she would speak (lots of praise to accompany both). Of course, she caught on fast and we soon had to learn "shhhh" because she wouldn't stop barking once asked to start:). I had to really work hard with the boxer I grew up with. She just isn't very vocal. She will speak on occasion and knows what the word means. With Ally it only took one day to catch on, with Sadie, it took a week at least and she still will only rarely speak. Good luck! Hope this helps.

I'd love to teach Chief to speak on command! Sam is awesome at it! Chief barely barks! And I have yet to hear the WooWoo song from him! At what age do boxers usually start making the WooWoo noises? I think it's the cutest thing! I'm hoping he does this!
