On Friday I brought my first boxer home. His name is Kobe he is a 6 month old brindle pup with white socks and a cropped tail.....of course he has his floppy ears!!!

He is odd for a boxer but i hope its just because he moved from his home with the breeder to my home. He is VERY quiet. He gives me a few kisses but does not show the typical boxer enthusiasm. Well its only been a few days but I am already completely enamoured with him.

He is so gentle, he doesnt mind being crated and is almost potty trained. When I got him I was told he had just been dewormed, but it didnt appear on the medical papers I was given. I have taken him to the dog run and he is coming out of his shell slowly.

This morning I saw him give the boxer pounce/run and pound the ground with his paws. I have an appointment in a week with the vet and we will examine some things i found odd about him, I will list them here in case some of you have had similar experiences.

1. Very timid with me.
2. all he wants to do is sleep on your couch
3. Refuses to eat more than once a day (1.25 cups of food per serving)
4.A bit of blood in his poop. ( I changed food when i got him tho)

Well thats a brief introduction, I cant tell you how much Joy i get seeing him do the littlest things, chewing his bone, i was grinning from ear to ear like a proud daddy. When he ran for the first time, I nearly jumped up and down with joy.

Welcome to the boards and congratulations on your new boxer.

Any dog who is moved from one home to another is going to go through some adjustments. It takes time. I rescued a 2 year old little boxer girl and she did the same thing. She was shy around me at first, mostly slept and was timid about eating. It took a couple of weeks for her to come around, relax enough to start being affectionate with me, and less shy. She eats like a horse now and is so affectionate and loving it is hard to believe she's the same dog.

I'd just give it some time and lots of love and attention.

As for the blood in the stool, I had the same problem. Nervous bowel syndrome is what my vet suggested. We put Susie on a bland diet for a couple of weeks and some medications and it cleared right up. It is believed it comes from switching foods and being upset and nervous and all that. I doubt it is too serious, but you should have the vet look at a stool sample and perhaps get some medication and bland diet for a while until the dog settles in some more.

Congratulations on your newly adopted boxer. I agree with everything Dan has said to you. We also adopted our Kailee at the age of 2 and she was quiet and shy around us for a while. The bloody stool could be anxiety and or the food change, but best to have it checked by the vet just to be sure.
Kailee seems to react to any changes in our household in much the same manner she did when she first came. Recently my husband had to go to another city for employment, so he is gone during the weekdays and home on the weekends. I have noticed her returning to her quiet, sleepy demeanor since this change took place. I believe it is just her way of reacting to change, and probably so in your boxers case as well. Good luck and keep us posted as to how things are going.

I'd like to comment on the couch situation........I think that is a boxer trait LOL. If there are to many people here and there is no spot for Eddie on the couch he will sit there and stare at me til I move over a bit so he can squeeze in!:p

The stories will come, Kobe is starting to be a bit more inquisitive...he recently met a 110 mastif puppy and the mastiff is teaching him how to play.

Hi Jordan and welcome to the Boxer board.

Your comment about Kobe "not showing typical boxer enthusiasm" caught my eye because I've sometimes thought the same about our Ana, who is approximately the same age. I think however that our concern might be because we read and hear so much about boxers being a very active breed. So we expect them to be that way most of the time. I know Ana has several bouts of running (including short intense bursts that we call her "crazy boxer run") and she will play vigorously as well, but there are many hours of every day that she just lays there like a floor mat. I also believe that some people might have boxers that are too hyper through poor breeding(?) but perhaps just write it off to "the nature of the breed", while I think a boxer with well developed temperment should be more like our Ana and your Kobe. Just my two cents worth!

As an aside, I'm not meaning to nit pick numbers but you say Kobe is six months old yet your DOB for him in your signature is 2001-01-04, which would make him five months.:confused:

heya Eric,

Kobe was born november 18, 00 I wrote january because i couldnt wrong:P I just looked on his papers. My dog does that too...running around in spurts.

Does Ann Give kisses? Kobe hasnt opened up yet. Also I htink he small for 6 month, he is only 38.5 pounds.

The blood in his poo was from a parasite which is going away.

Hi (again) Jordan,

Ana was born only two weeks earlier than Kobe and she weighed in at 43 pounds three weeks ago when we had her spayed, so I don't think Kobe is under weight, even though as a male he would be a little heavier.

Yes, Ana does give boxer kisses but she's not that smoochy, although boxers are not all the same. She does love to lick my legs though after drinking or eating.:(

I've posted a few pics to the gallery of Ana, with the most recent being under "May 2001" of her taking driving lessons (she's a very smart boxer).

Great to see you have Kobe's blood problem solved, and I wish you many years of boxer joy with your little guy.
