Hi, is this where I can ask about black boxers? My new love is black with white markings on her chest. I think she's gorgeous which ofcourse is all that matters but I'm curious. At the dog park we have met a few other boxers of more traditional coloring. Toby looks exactly like them in stature and stance. Only her color is different and everyone comments that they have never seen a pure bred boxer that is black. What's the story? I've found info about white boxers on the web but none about black.

Most "black boxers" are only very dark reverse brindles. Unforunately puppy millers and BYB have gotten the idea that they can black boxers as rare the same way they do for the "rare white" boxer.

thanks for your response.......I don't have a picture of her yet.....she does have a touch of brown so I've changed my signature to <reverse brindle> she has a white chest, so does that mean she's <flashy>?
one of the pages said she couldn't be a boxer if she was totally black???? but if you could see her making people laugh by the way she plays......she is definately a boxer!

She is only flashy if she has a lot of white. My two both have white blazes on their chests but are solidly "plain" Don't tell them I called them that. They perfer "just a little flash!"

I too have a female Black and White Boxer. She is registered as a Black Brindle, but has no evidence at all of being brindle. She is a big female and is not only gorgeous, but very intelligent. She is my baby. I have been looking for two years for info on blacks. I did hear that in the early 1900's the German judges disliked an obnoxious breeder who showed blacks. In order to get him away from the ring they disallowed the blacks and refused to place them, no matter how great their confirmation was. I found this in a book at the library.
I personally would like to be able to show blacks, they are truly gorgeous, the few that I have seen.

An old boxer breeder educated me on black recently. Here's what she said (she breeds bostons now.) Black was disallowed early in the breed for the reason that black is dominant. If allowed, it would eventually take over all colors and you would end up with a predominantly black breed. In Bostons, brindles used to be very common, but as more blacks were bred, brindles started disappearing. Now, brindles are rare in Bostons (I saw a tan brindle and it was really very lovely coloring.) Since the early boxer fanciers did not want to see fawn and brindle disappear from boxers, solid blacks were eliminated from the breed.

Hi,
My female is a very dark reverse brindle. She does have some fawn brindling but I can commiserate with you, because I always get " Boxers don't come in that color, she must not be purebred" and then inevitably they follow that comment with, " she is probably mixed with pit bull" AAARGH, imagine the dog holding me back :) Oh well WHat can we do.

She definitely sounds like a reverse brindle. The litter we got our puppies from had a couple. Reverse just means instead of a fawn base it's a black base with stripes. We have a brindle and a fawn. "Flashy" means that the boxer will have a white chest a white collar, a white mask with a white stripe on the head and white on the paws and legs that looks like they are wearing a pair of socks.
