Funny how we get sooooo emersed in "breed typecasting"
But I have to agree with Frequentflyr on this one, the other day Roxy and I were walking and an older lady started to pass us when she said, "Oh, what a beautiful Boxer, they are fantastic dogs aren't they?" Well, I just beamed, and Roxy behaved as if she knew what was being said.....and I said "YES they certainly are"! I don't really get too upset when someone mistakes her for a pit though, probably because I have never had a bad experience with any pit-bulls, some people just don't really know one dog breed from the next.

I answered my front Door and my two boxers of course tried to "visit" whoever has come to "visit" us.........The sales girl was just scared to death. I tried to reassure her that they were boxers and nothing to be afraid of. They only wanted to give her some boxer kisses!!! but she took off because she thought they were PITS!! so I guess there are some benefits for them being mistaken as PITS....i did not have to hear her sales pitch!!!

heres an example of what i said in my post about people running away. I quite frequently bring cinnamon into the community center i work at for socialization. Well on Thursday there was a dog attack in my nrighbourhood. The dogs were mastiff/pitbull crosses. The community center I work in is in the middle of my neighbourhood. Today I brought Cin in there to pick up some papers with me..one lady freake dout. Started hiding behind people rambling on about her being dangerous like the other dogs bla bla. Everyone that was there tried telling her she wasnt the same dog but she wouldnt listen. Eventually they gave up and left her to her ignorance and Cin went off and played with some kids who were waiting for their busses in the lobby of the community center

I must say I am pretty lucky- most people in my area know Rocky is a boxer and have come up to see him- I have not had a problem with anyone calling him a pit, but I don't think I would mind. I have nothing against pitbulls, and they do look similar- there are a few pits in my area, all very well behaved dogs.

I understand the fact that people confuse boxer's and pit bull's. However, regarding the laws against pit bull's, why does it matter b/c your dog is a boxer and not a pit, even if someone thinks your dog is a pit bull. Just pull out the papers to show people. It has happened to us many times and I still don't understand why someone would get upset about this - I just say nope they are boxers. If people are afraid of them I can either show them there is nothing to be afraid of or I can just let them be afraid. There are definitely worse things to get upset over. It's like someone calling your car a kia when it's ford, or something like that.

The only time that I really get upset about someone thinking Beau is a pitbull is when they ask what he is and I say that he's a boxer and they respond, "Are you sure he's not a pit?" I want to say, "Uh, yeah, I'm pretty sure I know what breed my dog is. Would you like a DNA sample so YOU can be sure?" I actually got both ends of the spectrum while I was out Saturday. I heard a guy at Petco say to his friend, "Is that a pitbull?" His friend said, "No, that's a boxer." I told him thank you very much for recognizing what my boy really is!! They came over and pet him and told me how beautiful he was. Then, at the dog park, a BOXER owner said, "Oh, he's a boxer? I thought he was a pitbull." She obviously doesn't know too much about boxers if she can't recognize one a foot in front of her.

I just let them think what they want. I know my beautiful boy is a boxer and that's all that matters.

No, they were just mistaken. Maybe that is the only dog breed name they know with short hair.

This is a mistake I would use to my advantage. When I walk alone with her (usually at night-time) I don't mind strangers being wary of her.

I wouldn't doubt if Laila's been mistaken for a pitbull before, her face isn't standard for a boxer. That's ok, I know better. :)

I personally love it when my neighbors mistake Lilly for a pit bull. I live in an area where most people rent, so there are a few of what most would consider low lifes. I obviously don't trust them, so I don't want them near my home. If thinking that Lilly is a Pit Bull keeps them from peeking in my yard so be it.

I tend to agree w/Shanz. Kids are hesitant to acknowledge them because they "look scary." (Actual comment.) I also think that the Brindles (like mine) are the ones that most often get called Pits.

Since we are talking about Pits, we have had several instances of the breed types discussed in this thread "attacking." So today in Austin, TX. they passed a leash law, that basicially says dogs across Travis County now face impoundment if someone complains they're off the owner's property and not on a leash. My fear is they are going to do away w/the "off leash" parks. My baby loves to "roam free" and would never hurt a soul. I think this is good in some instances, but basically the majority of us are being punished because a select few don't control their "mean" dogs.

They are also considering requiring residents to register their cats and dogs each year. The registration would carry annual fees of between $5 and $15, and was dubbed a "pet tax" by critics. AND I have heard that Boxers may soon be considered as a "dangerous breed." WHATEVER!

I alway say no he's a boxer but they do look similar, it doesn't offend me at all I like pitbulls there are many in my town and one of my good friends rescued one from the pound all that I have met are as sweet as can be. There is no such thing as bad dogs just bad owners.

I agree, I have known many pits and they are all very kind and gentle. One even let my 1 year old skin baby play all over him. It just depends on how they are raised. As far as I know Boxers and Pitbulls are cousins way down the line. Correct me if I am wrong.
