Terrible 1's

O.K. I've had it. Sarge is almost 14 months. He never chewed on things as a puppy like most do. I know he is still a puppy but he has started eating everything in sight. He has ate 5 pair of shoes and 4 walls. He is doing this mostly at night why we are asleep. He is crated at least 8 hours a day so we leave him out at night. This chewing on everything has just started in the last week or so. I dont know hat to do. When I wake up and find whatever he has chewed he ducks his head and runs off. He knows that is a no no. Could he be going through terrible two's. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Do you give him anythink else to chew constructively? I give mine a soup bone about every 4 days and it really helps. They get all the chewing out of their system. When I forget then I suffer because they get into my stuff. Also it sounds like if he is crated for that many hours he may be bored and may not be getting enough exercise so he is destructive at night. Boxers of all ages can have issues with that. I tried to leave my babes out of the kennels while we are at work a few times and it's always the same result...they make a huge mess!!! I leave toys everywhere and bones and it doesn't help...They are usually pretty good when we are home and at night they sleep with us. The first time i tried it i left them in the kitchen and blocked all access off and when i came home they had gotten into the bottom cupboard somehow and had eaten/ripped open a whole 12 pack of kraft dinner!!! I didn't find the cheese packs until a few days later... the second time i came home to find the yellow pages ripped and shredded all over the living room floor... So they are back in the kennels..They are safer that way..and I am happier!

I recommend a good run just before bedtime.

Raw bones too.

I definitly recomment raw bones or frozen bully sticks. Tyler will chew his heart out on these a few times a week and i really think that satifies his urge to chew. He doesnt seem very interested in chewing anything else.

Sounds like Sarge needs a good hard run and some play time after his 8 hour stent in the crate. Then what about confining him to your bedroom at night with some doggie appropriate chew toys like a raw bone or a frozen kong? Rowdy just lost his free priviledges at bedtime so he's back in my room for night-night. I just make sure all of the things he shouldn't get into are out of his reach and that he's tuckered out and ready for bed.

Sorry I have no advice for you, but I do wish you luck, and I'll be following this thread very carefully just in case I run in to the same problem when Biff hits "that age" :eek:
