The hydrogen peroxide and baking soda recipe works WONDERFULLY! My mix got sprayed in the face once and this was the only thing that got the smell completely off. He has long thick hair so we really had to work it in well and let it bubble for a while. Tomato products just makes them smell like tomatoes, it will wear off and the smell is still underneath.

She's back to her "baby" smell, but whenever I let her out at night she goes right to the spot where she saw the skunk! She's sniffing all over looking for him! Hasn't she learned anything? Now I gotta go with her every time just to make sure that she doesn't get in trouble again! Silly girl.

Hope your baby doesn't find the "smelly" again. Unfortunately in my 16 years of grooming, we had a lot of repeat offenders. I have never tried the baking soda and peroxide mixture, but what we used in the grooming shop was powdered douche mix (yes, the female stuff). I don't know how easy it would be to find in your area, but it seemed to work pretty well. We also used an enzymatic spray (the one we used was called En-zyme, I think) that was safe to spray on the dogs. At the end of my time there, we also used a shampoo called OxyFresh and left that on for about 10 minutes mixed with a degreasing shampoo.

The skunk spray is an oily substance. Products like tomato juice (with the acidic content) tend to cut through the oil. I have also heard that Dawn (or I imagine any other) dish soap works well, although this will kill any natural oil on the coat. The other main problem you have with a dog that has been sprayed by a skunk is that they seem to always get it in the face (sticking that nose where it doesn't belong). In order to make sure you can thoroughly wash their face with something that will remove the odor, after you rinse their eyes with water to remove the spray, I would put in some kind of oily eye drops (can't remember the name of what we used in the shop) to protect their eyes from the drying effects of any shampoo that may get in the eyes.

The peroxide mix works wonders. My boy was sprayed and I found that mix on the internet. Within 15 minutes, 95% of the smell was gone. There was still a very minor hint of the smell left, but nothing like it was originally. It burnt your nose the smell was so strong.

Taz got sprayed on Christmas Eve last year and the peroxide thing worked better than anything else. The most important thing is to flush their eyes or else they can go blind. In our case Taz got the stuff inside his nose and he had "skunk breath" for months.

Yes. Skunk STINKS! I live in a rural town in N.C. so skunk on the breeze is kinda a natural thing. Ya just don't notice it unless it's really close! Anyways my moms Great Dane got sprayed and we tried the tomato juice thing. Anyways...some ole country woman suggested a buttermilk bath. Ya know.....it stunk bad (no more than the skunk smell though) but it worked wonders! Made her coat nice and shiney also!

We were one of the unfortunate ones. My Kendra got sprayed by a skunk. DH did not realize it. He was leaving for work and it was dark out so he never saw what happened. He let her back in and she brushed his hand as she went by. He smelled something foul but thought it was a dog fart or the neighbor's had maybe spread fertilizer. We were city folk that moved to the country so this was a new experience for us. Anyway, the dogs all ran thru the house and to their room and DH shut the door and left.

While in the car on the way to work he sneezed. The hand he brushed came up to his face. Now he figures out the smell but it is too late.

I come home an hour later after working the night shift. I pull into the garage and can smell it before I am even out of the car. The odor got pulled into the air return vents in the house and was circulating. The odor made my eyes water. When I opened up the door to the dog's room I started to dry heave. The smell was that bad.

After a bath in tomato soup she smelled like tomato soup and skunk. I wen to the vet and bought Skunk-off. That did not work either. She went off to the groomers. We had to scrub walls, wash curtains and scrub carpets. I had no idea what all she had come in contact with before DH put them in their room. The dog's had a double sized people bed in their room. We had to throw it out along with the comforter and all the bedding.

The smell lingered in our home for over a month. It was a horrible experience.

Footnote: I have a cousin in CA who had a skunk die under her house. It crawled thru the lattice and had a litter and died. It took several weeks to find it. She had to sell.

I am sooo sorry that happened to you. It must have been horible. I guess I was lucky. She only stank like skunk for a few hours and nothing was ruined, but I guess it could've been much worse.
