It's 3 am and I just got finished washing her. I gave her a ketchup bath (the only thing I had handy) and rinsed her eyes and nose really good with water (her eyes were red, but after the bath they looked normal again). After the ketchup bath I washed her with shampoo and aplied her after bath creme which has a pleasant smell. Now she's wet and pacing through the house. My whole house stinks now!! God, I hope this smell will go away! I heard that the smell can last for weeks, is that true!? Should I wash her again tomorrow? She keeps trying to shake the smell off. It's obvious that she's bothered by it, but I looked her over and there are no scratches and her rabies shot is good until 2009. Is there anything else that I should worry about/or do? I appreciate any help since this is the first time something like this has happened to her.

OMG! I haven't a clue! Skunts are not a problem we have over here (so far as I know)....at least, not the four legged variety!

I gave her a ketchup bath
I'm sure this is just a translation thing, but over here, ketchup is tomato sauce.....You washed her in tomato sauce????

This is a recipe that I found on another thread:

titus24 said:
1 quart (or liter) of 3% Hydrogen Peroxide, H2O2.
Use fresh (unopened) hydrogen peroxide (H2O2). Hydrogen peroxide eventually turns into water (H2O).
1/4 cup (50 ml.) of Baking Soda
1 teaspoon (5 ml.) of Liquid Soap
1 pair of plastic or latex gloves

wet the dog first then soak into entire coat and massage in. leave 10 min and rinse.

Good luck!!! And tell Terra to keep away from those horrible skunks!! ;)

I had a dog 'hit' and did the classic tomato juice bath, if you can leave it on them for a while before you rinse, that helped speed up the process. Good luck, you SO have my sympathies... euwwwwwwwwwww

Update

Thank you all so much for all the advice. I was really really scared last night because I read some threads about it and someone was saying that their boxer went blind in one eye (Terra got sprayed right in the face!) and others said that the smell lingered on for weeks. Fortunately, I wake up this morning and the stink is gone! I can even kiss her on her snout:) You can still smell it a little bit and I'm sure that I'll smell it when she's wet, but it's way better than I expected. Hope this will teach her not to play with skunks anymore.

Don't bet on it mine have been sprayed twice in the last year and still are not any wiser. The silly pups think they will be the winner in the boxers vs skunk battle. All they have to do is smell skunk in the air and they are on a mission. Boxers are very prey driven.
