These posts are exactely what I was looking for. Oscar once again tore up our sofa cushion while we left him free roam in the house. He was being so good - I guess he just got bored yesterday. The first time he tore a nice hole in the cushion was 8 months ago - we started to crate him again and seeing that he is now 1.5 years old we thought that maybe he was more mature. We were wrong! Back in the crate he goes. We also give him a frozen kong peanut butter treat.....but I am sure it probably only last him 20 minutes....just a distraction for us to get out of the house.

I think a lot of people feel that crates are restrictive (like cages at the zoo). They want to give all the best to their companion animals and that often includes free rein of the house. I think you have to start thinking of the crate a different way. It is a way to keep your dog SAFE while you are not home. Early on I made the mistake of thinking Lucy could be left uncrated because she had done well on a couple of short-term absences. But nooooo. I would have to have about eight hands in order for me to count off all the stuff she tore up. She became trustworthy somewhere between her second and third birthdays. Well, I use the term "trustworthy" loosely because she is about to turn five and still tears stuff up from time to time.

Oscar is 1.5 years old and about 70 pounds, I'd love to be able toleave him loose in our home but he has once again caused destruction when left to roam the 1st floor. What size crate should a 70 pound boxer be in ? Please keep in mind that if he goes back in the crate he will be in it for 10 hours a day. Is that to long to leave a dog crated 5 days a week ?

Hammer just reached 8 months, and out of the blue he has become destructo-dog! He ate part of an heirloom wool rug this morning, fortunately I caught him before any major damage was done! We crate when we are gone and that's the best recommendation I can offer you! I just wanted to say I feel your pain!!

We got Quincy the extra large crate because eventually he'll be in there for about 10 hours a day and we wanted him to be as comfortable as possible and have room to stretch out a bit, but our friends with 2 boxers (the older of the 2 being 86 lbs) have the next size down and their dogs quite like them.
The rule of tumb I've been hearing about the duration that they can be left is one hour for every month they are + 1. So I guess Oscar would be 17 hours?
I think Claudia is absolutely right about it being safer for them to be kenneled - I can't even begin to imagine the things Quincy could find to chew and get sick from. Quick question - does everyones puppy like bounce sheets?

I am right there with you Sharon, Cassius is upping his destructo factor daily.. No amount of exercise and treats will settle him right now, I caught him munching on my PS2 memory card the other day:eek: There WERE shreds of my boxspring until recently, and he has taken to destroying his toys.. oy, this could be expensive, dog toys, dog treats and aspirin for me, got it!!! Oh and he has found an affinity for the undies too:mad:
