Tearing up Bedding

Ollie is a one year old flashy fawn. And, as I have been learning, he is just as ornery as most other young boxers. Our problem is that he continually tears up the bedding in his crate.

When he outgrew his original crate, we bought him one that was quite large so he could streeech out when he sleeps. :o At the same time, we bought him a VERY nice pad for the crate. Aways before, we had a blanket or an old pillow for him. Tearing up the old pillows was no big deal for us. We'd just go get another $4-$5 pillow and replace the old one, and it would last for a while. But when he did this to the $45 pad, it kinda $#&@*^ me off. :mad:

He wouldn't tear it up immediately. He may leave it alone for a couple of weeks. And then one day, he would take a notion to destroy it.

Ollie likes his crate. When it comes bedtime, he will come to us and let us know that he's ready to go to bed. When it's time for us to go to work, we jsut tell him, "It's time to go", and in his crate he goes.

Is this normal or is there some other padding we should use for his crate? :confused:

If you find something they won't tear up,let me know!!
I've had acouple come thru that I've tryed everything I know to try.
Kongs with Peanut butter, bones,chewys, toys.
Those just get old blankets now.
canvas is good but I don't spend that kind of money on them being a rescue.
I manage a thrift store so can get used stuff from there.
That helps alot.

Sergeant used to tear his bedding up when he was younger. We have always had some old towels in his crate for his bedding so it didn't matter much, he eventually grew out of the habit, he still likes towels in his crate as he can arrange them how he wants them! He likes to have some of them pushed up against the sides to lay against. Sometimes he will push them into a bundle and use them for a pillow. Underneath the towels we now have a pad of rubber underlay that was left over from laying a carpet.

At 2 1/2 Mack is not crated - but he does keep the dog bed/pad manufacturers in business! He especially like foam - lot's of satisfaction in tearing and shredding foam!
Try your local Goodwill or Salvation Army for very inexpensive blankets - you can bleach, wash them and heat dry so you know they are clean and sterilized. It won't hurt so much if he "modifies" those!
He doesn't ingest any of this stuff does he? Then you really do have a problem.

Gibson Loves foam!!! He has chew up the nice foam bedding in his crate and the bottom of his nice fleece covered foam bed in our bedroom. He now has been pulling out his big fleece blanket out of his crate and chewing that too. I didn tell him though if he wants to chew that stuff up he is going to have to get a job to buy own bedding or hes gonna have to sleep on the cold floor. He just gave me a funny look! haha

I didn't put the foam underlay in Sergeant's crate until just over a year ago, when he was 4 years. The only time we crate him now is when we have visitors, and they are not used to Boxers (which is not very often), and he doesn't know them, then he gets too excited. We went through a lot of old towels when he was a puppy, even an old blanket.

HI JIM! I HAVE THE PERFECT ANSWER FOR YA, AND BEING IN LAW ENFORCEMENT YOURSELF I'M SUPPRISED YOU DIDN'T THINK OF IT FIRST. ACQUIRE SOME "ONCE USED" TAC VESTS AND USE THE KEVLAR TO MAKE A PILLOW CASE FOR HIS BED!

IF AFTER THAT HE CAN STILL SHRED HIS BED, TREAT HIM LIKE A KING (AND I DON'T MEAN RODNEY ) BUT SERIOUSLEY THE KEVLAR THING MIGHT WORK.

IF YOU CAN'T GET "USED VESTS" INTERDEPARTMENTALLY (BY THE WAY, HAVE YOU EVER NOTICED THE "MENTAL" IN THAT WORD ), GO TO A MILITARY SURPLUS STORE AND GET THE EARLY STYLE VIETNAM ERA FLAK JACKET!

ONE SHOULDN'T RUN MORE THAN $40.00 (THAT'S WHAT THEY USED TO RUN ME.) AND PROBABLY HAS ENOUGH LAYERS IN IT THAT YOU COULD PIECE TOGETHER A COVER.

KEVLAR IS ACTUALLY FAIRLY SOFT AND FLEXIBLE, JUST TOUGHER THAN THE ! YOU MAY EVEN, AFTER HE DISCOVERS HE CAN NO LONGER SHRED HIS BED, BE ABLE TO CHANGE OUT THE KEVLAR, FOR SOMETHING ELSE, OR PUT ANOTHER FABRIC OVER IT FIRST TO SEE IF HE REVERTS TO SHREDDING!.
