Tear Staining

My 4 1/2 month (white) pup Winston has brownish/red tear staining on just the left eye. I've tied tear staining wipes and other topical solutions from pet stores, but nothing seems to really help. I wipe his face frequently with baby wipes also. Was wondering if this could be related to teething and if anyone has found anything that works for removing the stains. I have heard about angel eyes, but I'm hesitant to start him on that since he is so young. He has a clean bill of health from the vets office, she seemed to think it was nothing to worry about and suggested using no tears shampoo. I did try that but the stain is stubborn and still there. Would like to know if anyone has had any success with removing tear staining on their white dogs? Thanks in advance for your help.

Start giving filtered water and apple cider vinegar (the kind with the mother still in it not the kind you use in salad's from the grocery store) a good brand is Bragg's. 1 TBSP a day (I do 1 1/2 tsp per meal and feed twice a day). If you still get them then chances are it's a food allergy. Once you clear it up the stain that's already there will disappear over time.

Good luck!

Thanks for the reply. I'll try the Braggs and filtered water, I actually have some
Braggs at home. Hopefully he'll eat the food with the vinegar in it. I did suspect it might be a food allergy so I've switched food numerous times only using really high quality food. Right now he's eating nutro and seems to like it alot. Hopefully it will clear up soon, its odd that its only the one eye tho.

Tear stains are caused by excess tears (no surprise there :)). So what you need to work out, in order to get rid of the cause, is what is causing the dog's eye to water. Allergies is one possibility (but perhaps not the most likely - since it's affecting only one eye). Other possible causes could be:
- blocked drainage ducts (which also can have multiple causes),
- irritations such as entropion or distichiasis (which are quite different but have the same effect - the dog being constantly stabbed in the eye by his own eyelashes).

If it's something like inhalent allergies, there may not be much you can do about it. But as above, since it's only affecting one eye, a physical problem would seem far more likely than allergies. Thus, it's something you should see a vet about (eyes aren't something to mess about with). If it's something like distichiasis or entropion, then there are solutions. And it's worth noting that left untreated, conditions like that (aside from the discomfort of being stuck in the eye all the time) are liable to cause eye ulcers, and can eventually lead to permanent blindness. Soo - IMO a medical opinion should be the first port of call. Once you know what you're dealing with, then it's more reasonable to consider home-grown treatments versus medical ones.

Just as an FYI, Nutro is a pretty crummy quality food and they have multiple class action lawsuits against them. I'd recommend a better food such as Wellness, Taste of the Wild, Natural Balance, Solid Gold, etc.

Good luck!
