Super Boxer
At the suggestion of one of my friends who is into organics and herbal remedies (and has used several with her own skin AND fur kids) I had rubbed a couple drops of tea tree oil on the back of Beasley's neck/behind his ears to help with some of his itchiness as we transition into the winter. Mister B. and I hunkered down to watch Dallas & Philly on MFB as we do every Monday night and everything seemed fine.
This morning we woke up and he could not move his rear legs and could not even get himself up from a down to a sit or even think about getting off the bed. He wouldn't even move for peanut butter or bits of chicken breast I'd baked last night. Beasley never turns down treats so I knew something was wrong.
Did a search on tea tree oil on the internet and found out that it CAN (and I'm not saying ALWAYS) be dangerous to cats and dogs - depends on how much they come into contact with, the strength of the oil, and the animal in general. I'm thinking, "Oh great, I've done something horrible to my baby". Luckily my vet is open early and took him in straight away. He was able to move some but would stumble around like he'd been out partying. Seemed somewhat disoriented but definately had no control over his back legs.
Other than his motor skills, the other neurologicals appear normal, temp is fine, heart rate is normal. He's on IV fluids right now to try and flush the toxins and they're gonna give him a good rinsing to get rid of anything on the surface that hasn't had a chance to absorb, although most of it already has.
We'll see how he progresses and hopefully there's no permanent damage. I feel so bad that I did this to him but trust me it was TOTALLY unintentional - I thought I was helping him.
I just wanted to post this because some of our babies are more sensitive to things (even the ones that are organic/natural/holistic) than others.
