I think the tatoos are actually better than chips for the reason not all places check for chips and the tatoo's are hard to miss during an exam.

Also, based on my experience with Lily, the e-collars that the vet provides are usually white. Lily wouldn't move one inch with that one on and was like velcro. I went to petsmart and bought a clear one and she loved it and could move around better with more periferal sight. Plus it was cheaper than the one provided (purchased) by the vet.

Just an update. Tyson got his tattoo. He was such a trooper. Didn't struggle or anything. He was more worried about playing with everyone and their pets!! He only tried to lick it 2 times. I told him leave it and hasn't tried since. It is healing very well.
Thanks everyone for all your advice on this.

To say the least, I am so impressed with him. The tattoo is huge. It takes up his whole leg area! But as he grows a bit more, I'm sure it'll shrink a little. But I like it big. I can see it without my glasses LOL

I LOVE tattoos for id's.When i ran a greyhound rescue they are tattooed in the ears but like someone mentioned before the ears can be cut off so the inner thigh is the best option for this.
We have a tattoo gun that we use to ID our show rabbits and I think I wouldnt use it on our new puppy unless he was under anes. I plan on having him neutered and since I am a vet tech if the vets office doesnt offer it maybe they will let me do it while he is still under?
Hopefully I can find a vet here who offers tats.

I personally wouldn't want him put under just for a tattoo. It doesn't seem to bother him at all. Even right after he got it, he was more interested in giving kisses and playing than the tattoo.
When you have him neutered, remember NO ACE!! Just a reminder.

Oh, forgot to add. If you have trouble locating a vet who will do tattoos, call your local courthouse where you have to get the dog license. They should have a list of vets that do it.
