Ok, after much debate between tattooing and microchipping, we are going to have Tyson tattooed. I wanted to actually get this done ASAP after hearing about Boost. Anyway, he will go in on the 16th to get it done. He will not be given anything for this. My question is, will he need to wear a cone for a bit? If so, do you know if the vet would provide it, or do I need to buy one?
Thanks once again guys

My boy wasn't tattooed but when he had surgery my vet "provided it" but uh they SOLD it to me. So I'm sure your vet will "provide" you one but more than likely there will be a charge on your bill for it, so you may want to call and ask them as you can probably get one cheaper from somewhere else. And personally I wait and see how they do before determining if they need the collar, but it's a good idea to have them on hand just in case.

Where on his body is he getting tattoed? All of the tattoed dogs I've seen are done on the flap of their ears...

Okay, I must be a small town girl here. I didn't know they even tattooed dogs! Wow! Is it painful for them like humans?

As far as I know, he will be tattooed on his right inner thigh. I may ask about the ear, but thinking that may be more painful than the thigh.
Thanks guys. I think I'll call them tomorrow and ask them. Tyson does pretty well with not fussing too much over things. But I think I'd like to get the collar just in case. You can never tell what he may decide to do.

It is my thinking that yes, in all honesty it will be painful, but not as painful as say, a broken leg ;)
I just personally like the idea of the tattoo. I don't like the idea of the chip due to the fact that some tend to migrate from the injection site. And, I may be paranoid, but the chip is injected just below the skin surface. In my mommy worried mind, if someone stole him, what would keep them from trying to locate a chip and "cutting" it out.
A tattoo is more visible, and there is no way around it, it would show up better, hence, maybe giving someone a second notion of taking him if he'd ever get lost.

i never knew there was tattooing on pets. i never really liked the idea of chipping, but tattoo seems like a reasonable thing to do. anyone have a pic of what they do and know what it costs?

Stella’s tattooed. If your dog is registered with the Canadian Kennel Club, they have to be tattooed or michrochipped. I don’t really like the idea of it, but that’s the rules. Stella’s is on her right inside thigh. It was done a week or so before we picked her up, and she never had a cone. It’s not like an incision or anything; it just scabs over a bit a few days later. I’d say it’s about the size of my thumb. It really stood out when she was a puppy and all white – but now it’s blending in with all the spots she’s developing. The letters/numbers stand for something. SE is breeder’s letters, 7 was number of puppy (There were 7 puppies, I got to pick the # and 7 is my lucky number), and U stands for the year she was born. Here’s a pic of her’s: http://www.boxerworld.com/photo/showphoto.php?photo=79724&ppuser=39220

Thank you for posting the pics. I have only ever seen 1 other dog (happened to be a boxer) with a tattoo.
I am taking Tyson to the vet hospital to have it done, and it is $15.00 for the tattoo. It has a lifetime registration (have to go to the courthouse for the number) and it is $51.00
Not too bad in my opinion, to insure his safe return home.
He still is required to wear a stainless steel tag with ID on it also.
Thanks for the info guys!
