Tail it is Thank You!

My wife and I had pretty much decided to let Rocky keep his tail, or as she calls it "his favorite toy". Prior to deciding and researching boxers I read an artical about how most breeders/show dogs, and AKC did not agree with allowing a boxer to be natural or have floppy ears and a tail. I have never really followed other peoples opinion on such things. He is our Baby and he loves his tail so we thought to heck with him....I possed the question to ya'll however cause I can see that ya'll love your babies as much as we do. I do not remember the artical, as we really did our home work before we got Rocky as I am deployed alot and we have three small children, or as Rocky sees them now from what I hear "litter mates". Thank you once again to all of you!

Textbook answer

We read up a lot on boxers when we got ours and found that a lot of countries had banned cropping the ears, but were still letting the tails be docked because it served a purpose.

With the force that they swing their tails, they not only break things of yours but there have been cases where they have actually injured or broken the tail, so there is a medical reason behind it. The ears are just a vanity thing.

But your situation is different, since the dog has had the tail for some time and it's no longer an easy surgery, I would go with the answer my doctor gave us about the dewclaws. Our breeder didn't do them and by the time we talked to the vet, he said it was too late and to wait until he was older. Well when he got older and we brought it up, he said, well, it's no longer a routine surgery as now it is an AMPUTATION and that's a very major surgery for them. He suggested that we just be careful and let them be and THEN if he has an accident and injures himself requiring them to be done, fine, but to leave it be as nature intended.

I don't think I'd remove a tail if a boxer came to me with a tail. However, I love the look of a docked tail. I watch a friend of mine's Lab a lot and I hate his tail! lol! It's dangerous and I've almost shut it in the door a time or two! But that's just my opinion and I think it's just b/c I'm used to seeing my babies without tails.

I also wanted to thank you for your service! My Dh is in the Army and is deployed quite a bit as well, that's why I have my baby boys (along with my skin kids) to keep me busy! lovicon
