Hello everybody.....i have just recently switched my dog's food from purina pro plan to natural balance potatoe and duck because of allergies symptoms.......and i was wondering how long until allergies clear up after switching foods?.......assuming allergy symptoms(scratching ears, chewing paws)are food related, which in most cases are

I believe it takes 8-10 weeks. Just remember, you don't want to give any other treats or bones during food trials. While Ty was on the duck and potato, I gave him the d&p treats and canned food with the kibble, but nothing else. Thankfully, Ty thinks ice cubes are the coolest play/chew toy, so I gave him lots of ice to chew. Good luck to you, allergies can be frustrating. I hope you get a solution with the new food.

Funny you should mention this. My best friends Rottie thinks ice cubes are the end all be all of treats! Ask Tazz if he wants a "water cookie" and he goes balastic! He prefers "water cookies" over a real dog treat any day of the week. Its too funny. My Blizzy HATED ice. I use to put ice in her water bowl when it was warm/hot out and she'd grab the ice cube and drop it on the floor. She'd then wait for the ice to melt and then lick the water! Ugghh. Sometimes I wondered if there were any brain cells in that doggies head.

I have had major allergy problems with Napoleon. We have gone through so many different foods, I forget what we have and haven't tried. With him, if a new food is going to help, it is usually within a week. But I have also learned, don't change too fast and be sure and mix the food for a couple of week with whatever he is eating. Changing too fast will do a job on his tummy.

Right now, he is eating Natural Balance, duck and potato too, it is working wonderfully and has been for almost 3 weeks now. And, he loves it.
IMO, I really think it is trial and error with food.

It usually takes about 6-8 weeks to see an improvement, but all infections (skin, ears, etc.) need to be cleared up beforehand.

Sandy's Mom reminded me of something-she mentioned going through so many foods and not remembering them all. Definitely keep a journal of food name, dates and reactions if any. When DH and I try to go back through Ty's foods and compare them to vet visits for ear infections, etc. we can't remember which food he was on at that specific date and we are now kicking ourselves for not writing it all down.

feel your pain with allergies

Our Herbie also has allergies BAD. He's on Prednisone and thyroid meds too. We keep trying to back him down on the Pred every chance we get. He's also on the duck/potatoe and it seems to be the best we've found for him. We didn't notice a difference for almost a month though after switching from his previous kibble. The rescue place we got him from suggested giving him his own kibble as treats -- he thinks it's a treat when you feed it to him from your hand! Even by keeping the food/treats constant, the allergies still flare up and then ease up again. BTW, the hardest thing for us with Herbies allergies are the "ear flappings" in the middle of the night! It wakes me up every time!! We're ready to make him some ear muffs.....

I have Skye and Colby on the duck and potato formula also b/c of Skye's food allergies. I think she seems to be doing much better, although every time I say that, she has some kind of reaction! If there has been a big reaction, she's always had hers relatively soon into starting the new food. But so far, she's been fine, and hopefully we'll see an improvement soon. Surprisingly enough, I chose duck and potato last, b/c I was afraid of the duck, since she's been allergic to most fowl, but she seems okay...knock on wood. Now I feel bad not having tried it sooner!
Good luck! Food allergies can be VERY frustrating.

thanks for all the responses

Hello all and thanks for all the responses, it's been just over a month since i switched my dog's food and she still scratches her ears and chews her paws, although not as bad but too much as far as i'm concerned..........her ears get dirty often and i clean them as often as i can, although at times she puts up a fight when i try this, as far as her paw chewing........she does not chew until they are raw, so no bare skin and/or blood involved.........just wondering if it will take a little bit more time.......she does love her new food(nat bal pot and duck)......but i think i will bring her to the vet to get her ears looked at........again thanks for the responses and help.........anymore info would be greatly appreciated
